OEM Heated Mirrors DIY mod

How bout I trace the OEM mirror itself, and then I can send you a .pdf that you can print, cut out, and compare your mirror to?

 

That could definatly work, so long as it doesnt get jumbled during the printing, mabey make 1 refrence measurement(drawn on) with the size to make sure.

 

I have a 2012 DCLB Sport, and I purchased the supplies including the Sienna mirrors talked about in this thread. I had a quick look in the garage tonight, and it seems like they will work. I have stick-on fisheye domes so I couldn't get them perfectly face to face. This weekend I'll pop off one of the domes and confirm. The overall size is right, I think the shape is very subtly different, but my best guess is that it will fit and look so close you'd never know. The top inside corners look a bit more rounded on the Sienna glass, and maybe one long side had the slightest arch to it not present on the Taco stocker. I'm not sure if the new part numbers for the Tacoma mirrors are a change to the part or the supplier. Will update when I have time to make a better comparison.
I have a question about the relay wiring that others have touched on...I can't quite figure out why 86, 30 and the hot lead for the switch are all combined? There's lots of confusing diagrams online with relays wired all different ways, but best I can gather, #30 should be your 12V power supply, #86 should be the 12V 'trigger' from your low-amp timer switch, and #85 should be permanently grounded. In the diagram used here, it seems like there's always power (when the truck's ignition is on) at the #86 trigger terminal, and you're relying on the heater timer switch to supply ground to the relay when engaged? I don't know that this is necessarily wrong, but it seems unconventional maybe? I admit I am no expert with auto electric, and don't intend any disrespect to those that took the time to figure this out and record it for posterity..I also accept that a bunch of you have done it this way and it works...

 

The switch and relay are ALWAYS powered, the Switch controls the ground circuit for the relay, which then triggers the relay and terminal 87 supplies power

The way they are wired on the highlanders, is there is no relay.
Basicly, if using that picture as a refrence(ill make one later) Positive from both mirrors, would go to a powered circuit(rob it from a fuse), The ground wires from both mirrors, go to Terminal 4 on the switch.
So it would be the following

1: stays the same
2: stays the same
3: Body ground(anywhere on vehicle)
4: Goes to each mirror heater
5: Fused Power source.

The positive of the mirror goes to a power source.

Now to also note, it doesnt matter which end of the heater you hook to ground/positive as they dont have polarity.

This way you remove the need of a relay.

Thinking apon my above post more. The relay is a better way to hook it up as it will take the load instead of the switch.
Would probably burn out the switch the way I suggested



So backtracking that. There is nothing confusing about the relay wiring. Both terminals are powered to make the relay actuate. The switch applies the ground for the relay. It's the same way the sienna is wired

New Update. I found out that the 2012 Highlander mirror is the same as the 2012 Tacoma mirror.
The 2005-2011 mirrors are slightly smaller then the 2012.

Looks like those will work

I was confused since this mod uses the Sienna heated mirrors. Based on the part #s and compatibility list, the Highlander Heated mirror should work on the 2012+ Tacos.

Alternatively, Druzuki (as posted above) is confident the Sienna mirrors will work as well. Hopefully he will post his findings when he has a chance.

Once it is confirmed which heated mirrors will work FOR SURE, I will update the OP to included part#s/links for 2012+ Tacos as well.

Which actual year of Sienna are the mirrors from for the pre-2012 Tacos?

And do we know what year the Highlander mirror switch is from as well?

Search hasn't been fruitful...

Might swing by a few wreckers this weekend to see if they've got what I need - even if I can just get the mirrors, I'll do the mod with a relay and toggle switch for now, pulling power only when ignition is on to protect the stupid (me).

Going by the measurements of the mirrors on the link i posted and this link below, the 2011 tacoma mirrors are slightly smaller in dimensions.
Would probably work.

Got home too late tonight to compare mirrors, but will do so tomorrow. My truck is a '12, so if they're not going to fit just right, I'll be after a set of the newer Highlander mirrors, and the ones I bought from the parts list in the original post will be for sale. B0ules..I notice you're a fellow Canuck...IF the mirrors are a no go for me, and IF you have no success at the local boneyards, maybe we can work something out. I got them out of the US and think I'm into them for about $120CDN. I was also wondering if the current-gen Sienna mirrors are a match. I don't know what the glass is worth, but the Limited trim level gets you heat, blinkers (like the Muthco's) and auto dimming which I am probably not smart enough to make work. I have all the parts for heat, and I already have forward facing signals, so it would be easy to make that part work as well. Have to take some tracing paper to a dealership...Hopefully update tomorrow as to whether what i have will fit 2012+. Thanks all...

 

So the heated mirror switch its self is only for 00-03 highlanders? What about 04-07?

Reason I'm asking is I'm in Canadia and its been a bit of a bitch to find. So I'm gonna phone some wreckers and see what they have.

 

Switch is 01-03.

 

After doing some reading...the switch was omitted for 2004+ Highlanders.
They starting tying into the Rear Defrost, so anytime you press the rear defrost button it would in turn activate the heated mirrors as well.

 

So we could simply use a rear defrost switch instead then? I don't care of it's a mirror or window on the darn switch, as long as it works and fits in one of my blanks!

 

So I finally had a good look at the mirrors. When I initially looked and was optimistic, I was only really assessing the overall fit in the mirror housing, and forgetting the fact that you re-use the Taco backer plate. Given that fact, I think the subtle differences would be noticeable. Would it fit? Probably. But I think the ideal would be to get the newer identical shape/size glass as identified from the contemporary Highlander. I have to admit after reading the thread I'm somewhat tempted to just order the ProEFX tow mirrors, but I'm worried they'd just look too big. The photos of them are all on a truck with a bit of lift and upsize tires which gives the truck a bit more presence, whereas mine is stock and staying that way. There were a few posts over there against the tow mirrors unless you're towing a yacht or 60' camper, but even on my 10' utility trailer, it's nice to see my tie-downs still in place, etc. And the convex fisheyes are nice to not rub curbs when parking. You can do whatever you want. The purpose of this mod (as stated in the OP) is to get a clean, safe, and OEM solution to adding heated mirrors. There many ways you can customize this to suit your needs and budget.

Yeah, the ProEFX mirrors are pretty badass; large, but still effective for what they are made for.

Once someone with a '12+ successfully determines what glass to use, I will update the OP to include the part#s for that. I think you and Twalt87 are on the right track with the late-model Highlander glass.

 

Hi, This is a great mod. Just checked on www.hubcapsplus.com for the Burco replacement mirrors and the part number for the 2012 Tacoma and the 2012 Highlander are the same. The only difference is the heated mirrors are not offered for the Taco. #4366 drivers and #5433 passenger with the heated versions #4366H and #5433H. I hope this helps.

I ordered these mirrors and plan to find a 03 Highlander switch to wire them to. GREAT MOD!!!!!
