Are you telling me your only paid for a flat rate of $23/hr for only billable time? No travel time, training etc etc.

Do you not consider the cost for your benefits, company vehicles, advertising, insurance etc etc etc? It's not as simple as you think it is with the fat cats earning $87/hr of your work.

You hit the nail on head with this. I think everyone should have a choice, including the business of deciding to relocate if they can't afford the workforce.

Take a look at the Hostess (twinkies)situation. The company is going to liquidate and cost everyone (18,000+) their jobs if the union doesn't accept the concessions. Very sad if you ask me.

So I guess it's official now. No more twinkies! The union didnt want to take an 8% cut, so they went on strike. Now they don't have a job. Good strategy! Very sad to see but at the end of the day 8% is better than 100%.

Unions killed Twinkies. F you guys. ;)

I am non union and work with chillers and boilers daily. I see lots of non union guys making way more than the national average while the few Union shops I've been in seemed to be under the impression they were the top of the food chain.

I am compensated for Overtime, make Double Time, am graded on my job performance and compensated appropriately. I do provide my own reasonable hand tools though.... I rather have my own kit IMHO.

You should see my 401k. It beats the pants off anything you're getting in a collective bargaining agreement.

...and I wouldn't get out of bed for $23 an hour. If you think the Union is helping you gather that as a reasonable wage, floor sweepers make $14 an hour in these parts.

My Uncle Tedd tells stories about dealing with the Union Stewards, and how the "bargaining" was just window dressing on the deal they made on a golf course 3 months prior...

I enjoy the highest pay and the best benefits in my industry thanks to the Teamsters and yet, the company I work for is still enjoying record profits thanks to good management.
The unions and the companies have to work together to make it work. In the Hostess case, the company was already hurting financially so the union shouldn't have demanded higher pay. I blame Hostess for not managing their company correctly and I blame the union for their greed.

Unions forcing automotive and aircraft jobs south. I love unions for providing us jobs. In 2011 Alabama built and exported 745,000 vehicles. See a trend ? Major companies are dodging union states. If it works for you im happy for ya.

Hyundai - employment in Alabama 2700
Mercedes Benz employment in Alabama 2800
    Honda employment in Alabama 4000
    Toyota engine manufacturing employment 1000+
Now Airbus will start manufacturing A320 aircrafts in Mobile Alabama. Employmant 1500+

Thats right I joined the military to make my self a more marketable employee, and used my experance and training to land my union job. Ive worked hard and I believe in my union and they are protecting me and my rights everyday. Others have died to uphold the unions. This was a union unite thread for us not a bash unions I'm so upset about twinkies thread. Let's go into a bday thread and start complaining about age and some guy u heard drop dead at that age. Those union workers had the rite to do what they did and I'm sure reasons to it was there choice.

It comes from realizing they have been stooged out of a weekly fee to pay someone else's green fees....

    .
Saying Unions have 'run their course' is an incredibly ignorant thing to say because corporate greed is never going away. It's amazing to me how so many people can be fooled into acting against their own self interests.

You may be right about the greens fees, but I look at my dues as an insurance policy. How secure is your job if you fuck up? I've never been fired, but many of my co-workers have, and most of them are still employed today because the union helped them fight to keep their jobs. I've been employed almost 25 years and I'm a lot older and slower than the new guys being hired today. Yet, I don't worry about being "let go" so some "young gun" can take my place. I will gladly pay my weekly dues for this peace of mind.

If you fuck up to the point of getting fired , should you expect to get your job back ?

And that's why I support unions. Where is your respect for your elders? Don't we deserve steady jobs also? Haven't we sacrificed to pay to send you young folks to college so you can succeed in life? I have a mortgage and 60k in college loans to pay back for my oldest daughter and my youngest starts college next year. Why should I lose my job because I'm older and slower?

"To the point of getting fired", maybe not, but that's where the problem lies. You get these management folks who will do anything they can to climb the corporate ladder and will go to any length to make it happen. I've had managers try to sabotage me. I've seen managers do the same to other employees with the intent of getting rid of them. Now, if there is a valid reason for someone to lose their job, then I have no problem with the proverbial screen door hitting their backsides, but that's usually not the case.
Now, I've also seen guys abuse the system. Slack asses who aren't worth a damn getting fired over and over. We had one guy who was fired about 10 times before the union finally told him they were through representing him. I have a big problem with that, but those guys are few and far between.

I should be fired if I fuck up. If you can't handle the job anymore you bid out of it instead of clogging the system and dicking over the employer.
