ive been looking into regearing, i have 285's and though i probably dont NEED to, i would like to get some of the lost mileage and power back. i have no idea what parts i need to get it done, i know its different because of the e-locker and smaller rear diff, but looking for some help and opinions on what ratio to go to, i was thinking 4:56, can anyone steer me in the right direction for the parts i need?

Ring & pinion. I've heard good things about nitro gears. And I think 4.56s would be ideal for 285s.

Too low if its dd usage. Good for frequent towing or offroad use.

There's a local here with 4.88s on 32s with his 4 banger & he swears up and down its night & day on the highway. I'm assuming the op wheels occasionally.

i tow two snowmobiles and a 4 wheeler frequently. id rather have more gear than not enough after spending 700 bucks on this project. i also think 4:10s are hard to get as you have to go thru toyota which is twice as expensive as 4:56 from ECGS. i have my heart set on the 4:56's i just need help with what parts i need to buy to do the swap. IIRC i cant buy the same gears that guys without the e-locker and an 8.4" diff can buy... anyone have links to what id need?

Give ecgs a call. I think they will give you pretty accurate answers. Are you doing the gears yourself?

    4 banger.

OP if you're towing 4.56 would be a good choice. Nitro gears, master rebuild kit for front and rear diffs. May need a new flange as well. Call ECGS, although frankly you're better off just getting built diffs from them and swapping em in.

Oh yeah, and make sure you get a solid spacer on the rear pinion. Crush sleeves suck.

Go to their website and price it. Usually after core charge its 600 to 800 a diff which is pretty much the same youll pay to have a shop rebuild your stock stuff.

    Lol, no.

That's just the gearset for the rear diff. You need gears for the front, install kits with shims and ideally bearings, youll need a new flange, and PLEASE make sure you get a solid spacer in the ass end.

You have a lot of research to do.

And thats just parts. Labor to build diffs is expensive because its a tedious process, plus labor to get the diffs in and out of the truck if you can't do that yourself.

Gearing is not a minor mod. Also realize youll basically never get anything covered under your drivetrain warranty if the dealer finds out about it.

Either you misinterpreted what they were saying or they don't know what they're talking about. But both of those are par for the course here on TW.

I'm perfectly capable of swapping my diffs but didn't want to deal with it and just had ECGS do it turnkey. IIRC it was around 1700.
