Took my '12 4cyl 4x4 manual tacoma up in the mountains for the first time last weekend. Loaded with probably 500 lbs including myself, passenger, and a bunch of junk in the bed.

Wowza, lots of places above 7000 feet where I was rapidly losing speed evening gunning it in 4th. Once I got through Eisenhower tunnel it was just toast.. all the ups and downs going to Vail, lots of instances where I had to put it in 3rd. I felt bad running it in 3rd for minutes at a time at 4,000+ rpm but it was the only way I could stay at 55-60mph. Not sure what was worse, hearing the little engine struggling at high rpms or lugging at 3krpm in 4th.

4x4 worked well on snowy and icy roads though. Just got new tires about 500 miles ago (Goodyear Silent Armors) and was still able to get the back in squirrely on some turns.. once in 4wd everything was rock solid. Felt so much safer. She did smell a bit...burny after parking places.. all coming from the bed. I read that a lot of people experience that in snowy conditions when they've recently used 4wd. I had only smelled it once before when the truck had <2k miles on it after gunning it up some terribly steep hill (in 2wd)... but as long as it doesn't break

Pretty sure I'd get a 6cyl if I lived up there or snowboarded a lot. Coming down to 5,000 feet in the Fort Collins area it seemed like a beast comparatively. I bet the 4cyl feels perfectly powered at sea level!

I'll take one if they are still good. One of mine is stiff and the other is looser than a cheap whore.
