I also find it interesting that the people who "left" were the ones screaming "YAY UNION" the loudest. Maybe they just went on strike....

My Dads company was Union its whole lifespan. he was very competitive with the Non Union companies out here, and was awarded most all of teh heavy jobs. When I asked him about the Union, he replied "I would gladly pay more for propperly trained, experianced, and safe, personell, than cut payroll cost, and get sub par performance." He showed my his hourly performance of his crews, compared to a couple non union companies, and his were 25% less cost, and his jobs would generally be completed 20% ahead of scheadual. The Employees of his company never complained about pay, worked hard for a full day, and were a very professional group of folks. It got to a point that my Dad increased their pay above Union scale, as he said "They are worth it." At the end of his companies life, the Union employees stayed until the very last hour of the very last day. My Dad paid them for a full week, and gave them all a bonus of some sort. They all shook his hand, and went their separate ways. Now....The Union out here may be very different from others, as when times got slow, and construction would slow down, they collectively agreed to take a pay/benafit cut, so as to help the employers remain competative with others, and keep them working. Never once was there any complaints about it, and when work picked back up, the Union employers would increase pay/benafits back to where they should be.

I would like to say thank you to Murman, and all other union brothers and sisters who have served before me. Without you I would not be where I am today. It's because of you I have recived extensive safety training, education and a fare wage. It isn't an uncommon occurrence that I have the lives, and well being of myself, coworkers, and others in my hands. It is becouse of the traning I've received thru my union thet keeps us safe. With that being said, thank you Murman for doing your part for 25 years. I will carry your tools any day.

We had a project and the crews were mixed. There was 1 crane and it was union everyone had to share it and had time slots. A tropical storm was coming at night and it was gonna shut down the site for 2-4 days. Anyway, our time was scheduled for the afternoon. Nobody was using the crane all morning, we tried calling the guy and he gave some rap about union crap. he got there around 11 worked an hr, took an hr lunch, worked another hr then took a 30min break. By 3 the winds shut down the crane. Everyone knew this and he wasnt willing to put in a lil effort to help everyone out. As far as he was concerned he was happy the job was dragging on. Our guys were out of town, they work 10-12 hr days to get shit done ahead of schedule. They get a bonus. The unions on that project worked the mins and put in the min amount of effort. Every project I managed that had union involved there were always issues.

Depends on how they were paid. Was it a straight salary out of payroll? Or was it bonuses based on how well teh stock did? Was it stock options that they were paid in? That's usually how it works. If the stock holders are happy, then the board is happy, then the CEO's get a bonus based on performance. Not many people can run a successful large company and make the tough decisions that need to be made. It sucks, I dont want to see anyone lose their job, Ive been there, but the fact is most people work hard enough to not get fired. Everyone in my family owns a business. The #1 issue is always employees.

Yes, only people in unions receive on the job safety training. Everyone else has workplace casualties on a weekly basis.

    Welcome to the 1890's

It's unreal. In the new Comcast tower in Philly the unions forced the owners to install two types of plumbing (more hours for their workers). Google it.

Also, whenever a something comes to the convention center, you have to hire Union workers while setting up. You can't even plug in an extension cord unless the IBEW does it for you. And get this, you have to pay them "one hour" for them to come plug in the cord.
