Just past Julia Pfeiffer State Park on the right is a stop sign that takes you to Pfeiffer Beach. The rock is sometimes called Window Rock. Not sure what it's real name is.

California has so much to offer for outdoors people ! And it's really nice in the "off season"--the ranger said I was one of only 2 campers at Big Basin (and there is around 200 sites or so)... My own personal park !

But, of course, it rained the whole time I was there...

    Great photos everyone!

Thanks! It's for a long bed but I'd highly recommend investing in one if you camp much.

We plan on doing alot of camping this Spring and Summer. We got all of the projects on the house out of the way but the yard work. This season we are going to enjoy the new pool, deck and patio this year and do some camping in the yard.

Hey guys in the Mt. bike area we started a general bike stuff for sale thread. And chance there would be enough participation to start a camping gear general for sale thread? I have to buy pretty much everything except the tent, I have an awesome tent.... and we have the sleeping bag- air mattress queen size covered. Just an idea....

Yeah good deals on all the stuff I need sounds good too. The biking general sale thread seems like it is going to do alright in time.

How have I missed this thread for so long?! I have some catching up to do. The last couple pages worth of photos are really incredibly beautiful.

I hike a ton in the rainy season. I love a drizzly day, mud, green grass, and seeing nobody else for hours and my dog gets to run through all the mud. Now that I have the truck, winter camping is even better up off the wet ground.

I like the idea of a camping for-sale/trade thread if there's enough interest. I don't use/need much, but every so often like to pick up "extras."

I need to get a lot of basics, I want to do a lot of camping this year. My 4 year old daughter is as excited as I am with wanting to do more camping. I am thinking about a survival style camping weekend. Where I pack in enough food to make it through the weekend but try to fish and gather replacement meals. That would be fun!!!

Just found this in my email inbox...Adventurers and Scientists is a local organization that takes kids, veterans, and average Joe's like us out and teaches us how to gather data (measure tracks, collect biological samples...ie poo ...etc) for the local wildlife populations. that is then turned over to researchers at the local college, forest service, etc to hellp understand the range, health and habits of certain wildlife species. then we are encouraged to continue to collect data on our own adventures. I tried to go on a grizzly tracking weekend this last fall but it interfered with other travel plans of mine. :(

Just wanted to drop a quick line before the holiday and let you know that Horny Toad Clothing has kindly donated 20% of sales to ASC during the holiday season. Use the code SCIENCE from 11/26-12/2, and thanks for your support!

We've tried to camp in the rain a few times but just out luck, it only rained while putting up the tent. When you're prepared for it it cab be fun, if not prepared it sucks.

No absolutely not! I really don't need a new section to help spend my money!
    :p

    Seriously though, love the idea!

What is the best device for successful rain camping? EZ UP type Shelter? Tarps? Big Tent-type Shelter? Stay Home?

I tried with only my truck cap as shelter & soon learned it was impossible to cook (for me anyway) and nearly impossible to keep my sleeping quarters dry.

I did observe many EZ Up shelters being used, but I always thought they did not work very well without also adding the side curtains... And I try to keep my camping load kinda light... (truck camping, not backpacking)

Easy-Up works pretty well but they tend to lift in the wind and they're usually not big enough to cover a table enough to really keep you dry.

I picked up a giant tent that does OK but I wouldn't cook in it (or any tent I was going to sleep in).

In real windy situations I set up my tarp like a lean to. It holds up pretty well, I'll try and find done pics later.
