Hello.. We have a 2012 Toyota Tacoma 2.7eng 4+4 and the miles on it are 4423 I need to reset the service indicator so I don't get bugged at 5000 miles I used this method below.. But it din't work for me.. What am I doing wrong? Thanks for your help..

To reset the maintenance reminder for the 5000 mile oil changes on the dash we will need to do this:

. Set odometer to the total miles setting (ie not one of the two trip meters).
    2. Hold down the odometer/trip meter button (do not let go).
    3. Turn key to ON position (while still holding trip meter button).
    4. Odo will turn to flashing dashes. Keep holding trip meter until the dashes disappear and you see numbers again (IIRC it turns to all zeroes).
    5. Let go of trip meter button.

    That's it.

    From 2012 manual...

Switch the display to the trip meter A when the engine is running.
    (→P. 157)
Turn the engine switch to the LOCK position.
While pressing the ODO/TRIP button (→P. 157), turn the engine
switch to the ON position. Continue to press and hold the button
    until the odometer displays 000000.
If the system fails to reset, the light will continue flashing.

^ Yup, use trip A , instead of "total".

i dont know if it makes a difference, but could it be that your maintenance indicator wasn't on yet, so they don't let you reset it? again, just brainstorming

Well I'll tell ya.. I got screwed to many times over the years going to the dealers for service.. I avoid it unless it's warranty work.. I had there monkeys leave oil plugs almost falling out oil filters so loose oil came out and puddled under the vehicle I had taken to the dealers for service.. I don't like dealing with other peoples bad days at my expense.. I'm willing to do the work and pay for the oil.. This is the only way I know the job is done right! Sorry no luck with dealer service work.. George

About to say....if that didn't work you could always take the brute force approach... Using a 5/16" bit, drill a 1.568" deep hole into the odometer where the light is.

Hey I know! I seen rags get dropped on the floor then used to wipe the dip sticks.. Heck you see that all the time. I think Free is great but there are just some things you can't reverse once done.. if my wife had to get the stuff done because I couldn't do it I think that would be great.. it's a great deal.. In 3 years I had found 5 oil plugs in the road and 3 valve cover oil caps and 6 gas caps. " I know can't blame the gas caps on the dealers" and the other stuff I found over the years was more likly service stations. But between that and my experiences with service in general over 35 years I just feel better doing what I can myself. We put less the 5000 miles a year on the truck..
One thing I would like to know is how well they hold up in the NH salt belt with winters here? i had a Hi lux Toyota years ago and I had more fiberglass holding it together then steel.. Our sales person told us that his frame rotted out in 5 years and he was bragging because he said Toyota was replacing it! Great I said.. But 5 years? The dealer he worked for would not inspect it.. Hect it was a 2007... G

Mine is probably still too new to be any indication, but so far, so good. I do usually try to run through a car wash with a good under body spray pretty regularly in the winter though. Not much else you can do but move south.

    Lots to come
I have always done my own oil changes since I was a teenager. I just like doing things myself; however, I am taking advantage of the toyota care, in fact I take it in tomorrow for the 5000 mile maintenance. I have heard some horror stories and am a lil nervous. I just hope everything goes smoothly and I will definitely be checking things over before I drive off the lot.
