Kap's a stud with everything to lose, he's going to bed tonite with a big 'ol shit-eatin grin on his face and Alex is still gonna be kickin the cat into the wee hours of the morning. Notice Alex did not look happy tonite.

Dude's a mad baller, he's got a lot to prove, he's bigger and faster than either young or montana, he's got a fucking cannon for an arm. Saints D is going to be tougher that the bears were. Maybe Kav will let him bootleg some too.

I think that if alex isn't cleared, kap will play BUT, going into the playoffs it does lend credibility to coach's using both QB's for different situations, it's weird and not really done in the pros but I have faith in Coach, the man knows what he's doing.

I'm afraid Harbaugh is going to jump the gun and start Kaep this week and I hope he doesn't. I have always liked Kaep and what he did last night was amazing. But Smith is 18-5 since Harbaugh came in and he deserves to keep his job. That being said whoever starts is going to tear up that awful New Orleans Defense

Some flags and center console divider... lots of things on the wanted list.
Harb said that he would play the "hot hand" in the aint's game. Both QB's have been hot so far... but he can't play the "watch both in practice" game. If he does, neither will be ready for the game only getting half the practice reps.

Only if smith doesn't clear. Harbaugh has said all along that smith is his guy, he's not going to go back on it i don't think. You can't ignore the record with smith.
    on the other hand......
letting smith run is a HUGE risk, concussions are bad, additional hits make them much worse. Kap is bigger and faster than smith, young or montana as the QB run is always been part of the best Niner offenses. The problem with that is that defenses would key in on that if Kap comes in. Thinkin out loud here, if Kap does come in, the deep ball is a serious threat as well as the QB running, i suppose if the FS comes up, throw behind him, if not, then run.
I don't agree with putting Kap in in the middle of a series though, think if coach is gonna do this, then put him in for a whole series or even a quarter.
This all may be a moot point though, if alex starts and takes another blow to the head it's over, Kap starts, period. IMO, alex should sit out at least a couple more starts at least.

I'm scared to see what will happen if Smith doesn't clear and Kap starts again and lights up the Saints. He would win the job for sure I would imagine. He has the potential to be more than what Smith does as a game manager. I say let Smith loose for one game and I wouldn't be surprised if he did some amazing things too

Well there is a big problem that i see still, if fact a couple of problems. First the niners as a squad went 4/12 in third down conversions, albeit against the #1 ranked defense but still it's a real issue. The bread and butter of this offense is 1st and 2nd down run to set up 3rd and short, that has to be addressed no matter who the QB is. Second, pass protection, if smith plays, picking up blitzes is going to be huge to keep smith from getting creamed and I don't see coach letting him run and risk a huge hit. That hinders the offense as a whole. On the other hand, Kap was shedding blitzes and out running everyone and still making throws but I think coach had him on a short leash last night, meaning no QB naked bootlegs.
Smith is no doubt chomping at the bit but I think it would be a hindrance if he can't run freely and protecting him in the pocket takes priority over moving the chains.
I say split the practice snaps between the two and make another call for the starter on game day. IMO it hurt the Bears defense because it was based on stopping the run but not against stopping Kap once he was flushed from the pocket.

Very good point on 3rd down conversions. Always been a concern for the 49ers under Harbaugh. You have to take into consideration last night against the Bears that they don't really blitz. I believe they have the highest percentage of plays of only sending 4 pass rushers. I would prefer that neither Colin nor Smith run the ball too much, but Kap got the best protection I have seen from the O-line all year. I have never seen them block like that for Smith

Gore was blocking like a beast last night. He upended Briggs on Davis' TD catch. The Bears don't blitz that much, but they do more than the 49ers. What the Bears will do a lot is show blitz presnap, usually with Briggs or Urlacher in the A-gap, then either back into coverage, blitz one, or sometimes both. But when they did blitz, it was picked up Gore/Hunter, and on one throw to Davis, Kaep threw it on target with Briggs in his grill.

Let's not forget that the 49ers have three 1st rounders on their O-line, and a center that has a SB ring from when he was New Orleans. So the protection was there. I didn't see anything from Peppers or any of their DLine last night
