So while I was having my oil changed at the dealer(got two free ones with purchase of my truck) I was looking around and noticed that the Tacoma, FJ, and 4Runner(all 2012 models) all have the 4.0 V6. The Tacoma window sticker says 236 HP, the FJ window sticker says 245 HP, and the 4Runner window sticker says 275 HP. Does anybody have any thoughts on this?

Different tuning. im guessing its to give the Taco a different powerband. Personally i think the extra 39 HP might be useful.

    FJ-
    4.0-Liter V6 DOHC 24-Valve with Dual Independent Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i); 260 hp @ 5600 rpm; 271 lb.-ft. @ 4400 rpm

    4Runner-
    4.0-Liter V6 DOHC 24-Valve with Dual Independent Variable Valve Timing with Intelligence (VVT-i); 270 hp @ 5600 rpm; 278 lb.-ft. @ 4400 rpm

    Taco-
    4.0-liter DOHC 24-Valve V6 with VVT-i; 236 hp @ 5200 rpm; 266 lb.-ft. @ 4000 rpm

Difference being the Taco lacks Dual VVT-i, and is tuned to make more power at lower rpms

Something changed in the way they rate the engines if I recall correctly. Chris4x4 posted a link a while back. The engine didn't change, just the way they rate the HP.

All of these numbers were off of the window stickers of brand new 2012 vehicles

^^This is your answer. The FJ and 4Runner have different engines than the Tacoma. Sorry, we got on a tangent.
