$1500 is a little expensive. You can find them cheaper for sure, just keep looking around and be patient. Might have to drive somewhere to get one too. You cant purchase a motor from jdm because its not a store. JDM (japanese domestic market) engines, parts, etc, just means their actually from japan.

REALLY?! that sounds like a heck of deal, maybe even a "steal". worst case scenario, even if you had to fully replace the engine, and or other parts, that would still sound like a deal. Good luck on the engine and everything, hope there are no major problems. maybe there is, i just wouldn't know. i'm not a "gearhead" or an engine guy, etc.

4runner 3.4 motors have less hp than the Tacoma 3.4. Damos I never heard that, my boss's 97 tacoma does seem quicker than my runner but i just thought it was because the tacoma's are lighter.

It's been a long time argument, some say its do to the runners more restrictive exhaust some say its in the programming do to the different regs between a truck & car others have speculated that its just marketing? Either way you would install the new engine with your taco accessories. But if you compare the 04 runner to your 04 taco it's also not a valid argument because I believe by then runner had already gone to the 4.0.

It's only like 7 less hp. They also have a different stroke for some reason too. I found the info some where I will look for it later. 02 was the last year for the 3.4 in the 4runners

If the 4runner 3.4 has a different stroke and a slight difference in hp will installing a 4runner 3.4 in a tacoma cause a check engine issue?

If it has a different stroke then it will need to be different bore as well to maintain 3.4 liter / 206 ci.

A few decent engines on ebay. That's where I would head.

    .

That is correct.. It's a difference between bore and stroke on the 2 different motors... I read it on the internet somewhere so it has to be true.

Hey Dave, check out Car-parts.com type in your region and area you are willing to travel to get the part and it will spit out a tone of motors, I just did a quick search. Don't know if pre 2001 motors fit, but up here in the north there are hundreds of them as they are the buy backs. Good luck on it, not that you need it after a deal like that, awesome!

Dang man, that's a helluva deal! 12 years ago, $500 got me this little 93' 2wd hilux that'd been run into the back of a stake bed truck, so $500 for your truck today is unheard of! Great work!

Seems like there should be an excess of engines bought back by toyota from frame issues.

If that were the case the market would be saturated with low mileage drivetrains and I would have a fresh 3.4 and a 5 speed in my 252k mile 96 for sure. But sadly Toyota crushes all of them. Just as bad as that cash for clunkers BS from a few years back. Used engines are out there you just have to spend the coin to get one. I wonder if any of the JDM engine importers bring in 3.4's? Those always seem to be cheap for low mileage engines.

I found one from a 02 runner with 130k from a local yard for $1400.00, and that's delivered to my work. The salvage yard told me that the taco 3.4 is the same as the runner 3.4, is that true? Any members ever do this swap?
