    When someone is laid off / terminated , and they qualify for unemployment benefits , where does the benefit cheque come from , the government or the former employer ?

    So , once again , if that is the case , why would an employer " fight " whether or not a former employee is entitled to benefits ?

    I don't understand what would be gained .

    oz, in this case it doesn't matter. the company is going out of business. if the company was not going out of business, the state would increase there rate for awhile.atleast a year or more until employees were no longer getting unemployment.

    The rate paid by the employer is fixed here at 1.4 times the employee's contribution portion , that is why I couldn't understand the advantage to fighting the benefit

    oz, i think the rate here is 3.7, its been ten years since i had to pay for employees. it may be less, i remember paying 3.7 percent for something!

    Here the employee pays x % , usually deducted each paycheque , the employer pays 1.4 times this amount

    For example if the employee's monthly deduction is $100 , the employer pays $140 additional
