i second what janster says, this stuff boggles my mind but i LOVE thinking about it. after watching all the universe shows recently (on the discovery channel i beleive) i think there has to be life out there.

they say the universe is endless, therefor there are an endless amount of possibilities. which means there has to be life, theres another one of me or you out there somewhere, hell there are endless amounts of me and you out there, going about our lives in an endless amount of different ways. if you think about it it actually makes sense if space goes on forever the possibilities go on forever. chew on that :)

another interesting thing i learned from the light speed episode is the only reason we cant see any further out into space is because light has not had enough time to travel any farther than 13. something million light years away, because as they say thats all the older the universe is. wow i could go on forever with this stuff if interests me like crazy :D

Awesome thoughts you guys put down! I agree 100%.

The length of existence for the planet earth is microscopic compared to the existence of the universe. Other planets with life forms have come and gone - nothing can last forever. The amount of comets circling the earth is mind boggling. Given enough time (thousands or millions of years), one of them is going to collide with earth. Minimal damage will be a disturbance of our atmosphere with catastrophic results. That has happened before. Maximum damage could destroy or send our planet out of orbit and eventually into the sun.

We have discovered multiple craters on earth from comets that would end life as we know it. It's happened before and will happen again.

These comets are frozen to an unimaginable degree. Life could be suspended inside of them and, upon impact with an atmospheric planet, could be released. I believe is how life began on our planet. Evolution begins from there.

When we are hit by a comet large enough to destroy the planet, microscopic organisms will begin their travels through space (as comets) and eventually begin life on another planet.

With the endless amount of planets out there, I believe there is life in some form of existence (maybe microscopic, maybe the size of dinosaurs, maybe larger). Hell, there could be life out there as smart as us. No, they aren't living life the way we are but they are living a life. Even if they were intellegent enough to explore other solar systems (planets around stars), it is nearly impossible they would find our planet during the existence of humans (which could only be for a 500,000 years).

This is cool to think about..
It is thought humans have walked the earth for about 200K - 400K years. Dinosaurs were believed to walk the earth for 250 millions year.

As other people posted, with so many other stars out there, there has to be more planets we don't know about, and there could be a slight chance there is life on those distant planets...

not all stars have planets.... i think theres life on planets, and im a big fan of dark matter... wouldnt it be spiffy if there was a whole fleet of planets with life but they exist/made up of dark matter...

They can see so far now scientists are finding "empty" spaces...in space now.
This stuff is so crazy to think about, I love it.

and one more thing. kinda off topic of life on other planets but think about this:
We use fossile fuels, made from fossils of dinos. When the next ice age hits we will get wiped out like the dinosaurs. and over millions of years WE may be the next fossil fuels.

I kind of think that we as humans, would be ignorant well maybe a better word would be arrogant, if we thought we were "it". The universe is huge and big enough to share with out even meeting a neighbor a galaxy away lol. I've never seen an alien, but I have seen some freeky shit in my life, and no, thebigk, it wasn't your ex wife....lol

It would be sheer hubris to believe that we are the only planet among billions that has life. Shakespeare said it best: "There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy." We don't know everything, can't know everything, so to make a judgement would be impossible, but nature doesn't make one of things as a general rule, so I doubt there is only one planet with life. Whether or not that life is something even remotely similar to ours, well, that is another question. Oh, and I believe in ghosts too. :D

I like reading others responses to this question...

It is so hard to grasp how BIG the universe is. Its so cool to think that the stars we see may not even be there because the light we see from them is BILLIONS of years old.

That is one thing that I can't see our science and technology overcoming. You can't make light travel faster. So we can be studying a particular planet that has all of the factors to sustain life but the planet may have exploded already.

I also think evolution works the same way and assume atmospheric planets are bound by the same laws of physics. So I do think there are other human-like organisms out there. They may not be evolved to our point or they may be FAR past us. We'll never know!

The universe is vast beyond comprehension. I do beleive somewhere out there life exists. What it is I have no idea. This planet cannot be the only one able to sustain organic lifeforms. Earth is a relatively young planet and as such we have not been around long enough to have adavanced to the state which others may have achieved.

I haven't seen an alien yet. But I did see a dog walking with a Klingon.

I do not believe in ghosts. Dead, gone, done, stick a fork in it, buried, burned, fertilizer.

This is a picture when the Hubble was pointed in a completely dark part of space. Look how many galaxies are in just this small part of space. If there are billions or trillions of stars in each galaxy and there are billions or trillions galaxies, that leaves room for many potential chances of life elseware.

    Yup....
    Somewhat offtopic...but
I actually think that the human race will be eliminated by something other than cosmic matters. Like.... a disease, a condition, a virus that will probably be developed by accident, that'll spread rapidly and kill us all.
