    4.19 @ 36mpg = $0.1164/mile
    3.42 @ 22mpg = $0.1555/mile

    20,000/year = $2328/year vs $3110/year

    My '06 Duramax pulled 18mpg. 8000# 3/4 ton 4x4 crew cab fully loaded with 285/75-16 and a 6.6litre engine that could tow a 45ft 5th wheel.
    My '03 Tundra pulled 16mpg. 5000#, 1/2 ton 2wd with 265/70-16 and a 4.7litre engine that couldn't tow a 7000lb toy hauler.

    Yup... No brainer.

I may be biased as I have owned and performed a few diesel swaps.

    currently have
1988 GMC 3500 with 6.2 diesel swapped in along with 5spd manual.
1987 samurai with 2.4L mercedes diesel.

    Have owned before
    m1009 blazer 6.2 diesel
    m1008 chevy 6.2 diesel
    2005 dodge 2500 5.9 diesel
    1989 toyota 4x4 with 1L diesel swap
    1984 gmc 2500 6.2 diesel (currently in 88 gmc)
1982 Mercedes 240D (currently in samurai)
    1994 suburban 2500 6.5 diesel

looking for mercedes 5cyl diesel to put into my 97 taco

If you are buying one used or swapping the motor in diesels can certainly be worth it, but if you are buying a new truck it is hard to justify the 8K extra up front when the new diesels dont get the mpg they used to. I know you can mod the new ones to get better mpg and have done quite a bit of mods to diesels before but on a new one then you run into warranty problems etc.

If you are going to toss a bunch of numbers around how about you do it for a full cost of ownership. Between those two trucks.

Like MSRP minus things like oil change cost, cost of fuel filters, glow plugs and anything else that costs more to own a diesel.

Yes diesels are so cool:cool:for rednecks that is.

Bw s256 turbo with 3 in glass pack dumped pre axle raptor liner bed and top rails and fenderflares and rocker panels. Hunter side steps. Plasti-dipped upper fenders and emblems. satin black spray paint here and there inside and out. 5100's set to 1.75" up front . C channel front bumper. Maxxis bighorn 255/85/16
Oil does cost.more.for deisel but u can go.2-2.5 times.longer on oil changes and yeah u.might have to replace glow plugs but not every 30-40 k miles like. Is recomended for or.spark plugs I honestly.would.say long term regular maintainence cosy will be about the same.

    Oil changes were a wash.
My Duramax took 10 quarts, the GM oil life monitor triggered anywhere between 8k and 12k depending on driving conditions.
    10 quarts + 1 filter every 10k cheaper than 6 quarts and a filter every 5k.

I bought fuel filters in bulk and changed them myself. $17 every 15k.

So the Diesel saved over $1000 a year in fuel costs, was a more capable vehicle, and only cost an extra $40 every 30k in fuel filters.

    Still a no-brainer.

I think just having the option from Toyota would be nice. People would test drive them and see the difference in torque and mpg. I had the opportunity to test drive some BMW 335's last year, one being gas, the other deisel. There was no comparison. The deisel had so much usable passing torque it was stupid fun. Traffic was a non issue. Needed to change lanes and someone was beside you? Notta problem, head firmly planted in headrest. I know this was a beemer, but I would love to have more torque than horsepower any day. Plus the added MPG would be awesome. Again, just offer us the option.

The guys at the gmc dealer told me to not go by the oil life monitor. They said it would void warranty. Seems kind of ridiculous to me for the dealer to say that.

How often do we listen to the shit the Toyota dealers say? OR how often do you hear absurd stories on here about the shit Toyota dealers say?

The GM OLM is actually pretty good.
There's a reason Toyota's maint light is just a 5k timer, and the GM OLM comes on anywhere from Xk to XXk depending on driving conditions.
There is actually a fair amount of intelligence behind the GM OLM system.

Of course, the OLM is programmed assuming factory recommended oil... full synthetic for the Vette and perhaps the Camaro, conventional 15w40 for the Duramax. I was running Mobil-1 or Amsoil 5w40 so I had no issues at all running full intervals.

Some guys would get on the forums and say "I change it when it looks dirty"... I'd be changing 10 quarts every 300 miles if I did that.

The real reason to have a diesel engine in a light duty truck is to blow black smoke on everyone else when you accelerate away from a stoplight and to sound like a New England lobster boat while doing it.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
I'd personally never bother with a diesel Tacoma, the fuel economy for one would be lucky to see 30 due to the weight and the brickiness of the truck. And the towing capacities would not be much higher. Horsepower and torque ratings don't decide the towing capacity of a vehicle, it is decided on the maximum weight the vehicle can handle without any problems. If you want a real diesel to haul and tow 5th wheels with, buy a Duramax, Powerstroke, or Cummins for that. If you want a diesel for mileage, look into the TDI Jetta.

I'd consider a diesel option, but I'm still perfectly happy with my 4.0. On the other hand, what I'd give for a JP 8 Tacoma!

Thats what I figured? The owner manual said it uses engine temp, trans temp and a lot of other factors to determine the oil change time. Seemed like a good idea to me and sounds like it worked good. But the dealer tried to tell my boss that is was no good and not to trust it. I think they where a bunch of idiots to say that. Unless that came from GMC Corp? Who knows?
