I put aftermarket wheels on my 09.Stacked my factory wheels and tires in garage they still have sensors. When I pull my truck in garage it picks up sensors and light goes out.I bet if you keep spare in truck light will stay off.

'09 and later computers won't recognize the 5th unit.

Even if present, the computer would have to be programmed to recognize the spare while the spare is in use... then when the original tire is reinstalled, the program would have to be changed back.

People just need to realize that the spare is just that... a spare tire intended to get you to a place to replace/repair the flat.
While the spare is in use and the original tire is not mounted to the truck and inflated, the TPMS light will be on.

Why the OP's light didn't come on sooner? Dunno.

Only if pressures are above the programmed minimum and all tires are within 10psi of each other.

This is true. Look at the valve stem on your spare. It's a standard replaceable rubber one and not a metal TPMS one.

I feel the same way about nanny laws, but the TPMS is a useful tool and can save some serious money.

Wife picked up a nail. Tire went flat while she was on the road.
She stopped when the car started getting "funny" and did not damage the rim, but the tire was damaged and needed to be replaced.

Few months ago, I had just gotten my TPMS fixed at Discount Tire.
That next week, on the way home, the light came on.
I thought the system had malfunctioned again, but to be sure, I pulled off the freeway, shut the truck down, and restarted.
This time, it did not flash for "a minute or so" after startup... it just went directly to "on".
Got the gauge and checked, and sure enough, the left rear was exactly 10psi below the rest of the tires.
I rolled the truck forward and found the nail.

It was a slow leak. I would have gotten home no problem.
It MIGHT have been okay the next morning, but might not.... and there's no place to get a tire repaired at 5am.
But I was able to stop at Pep Boys about 2 miles from where the light came on and I was back on the road in an hour.

I am with you on this.

I got a hole in a tire on a high speed dirt road. Light came on I pulled over got out and the tire was already half flat. That could have been bad had I not pulled over immediately.

A lot depends on the system and number of sensors. If your spare does not have a sensor in it, and you placed the original tire in the bed, over time that sensor will stop sending it's signal.

To prolong the life of the internal battery, the sensors turn of after a period of inactivity (When your truck is not moving) When you get into your truck and start driving, the sensor's internal motion sensor triggers the sensor to turn on and start transmitting data. If your original tire was in the bed, it is possible that it never got reactivated and your system then set a code. Just saying that this is a possible explanation of what happened.

I got a question abot the TPMS frequency (the transmitters and it's receiver).

If you were to park next to another Taco that has a low PSI in one of it's tires, would your TPMS light turn on because of the close proximity?

No-The sensors broadcast an ID code and low pressure signals. So your truck will only read the sensors it's told to.

Exactly. Your TPMS gets programmed with the individual codes from your truck.

That works fine until one of the sensor batteries go bad... which it will somewhere in 7-10 years. One of mine did after only 5 years, and the batteries are not replaceable. Have to buy a new sensor and program the vehicle to read it.

The whole notion that TPMS will save money...or provide enhanced 'safety'...is very specious, IMO. The logic is flawed, and the exchange here should offer clues to why. OP did not know why he had his light on, but he was curious and wanted to find out why... how many other owners DON'T bother? Or pay a shop to troubleshoot and do needless repairs?

I bet you'd find the same owners who can't be bothered to check their tire pressure and are clue-lessly numb to the handling of their vehicle (with a low tire) will also ignore that bothersome light after the second time it lights for reasons they can't fathom. And then after about 7 years when the sensor batteries start failing and they find tire shops want another $100 or so to replace them? what then? right...the light stays on.

It's just more paternalistic knee-jerk reaction from Congress fueled by safety activists and tire shop lobbying money after a couple high-profile cases with Explorers. The one place it makes sense, IMO, is on commercial carriers for hire: taxis and buses in particular.

So far I've added an Advance folding bed cover and since removed it. Gave it to my son in Maine, he has an 05 2wd. GT perfect fit seat covers. Weathertech floor mats and window vent visors. Waag center brush/grill guard. Hose clamp tailgate mod. Turned off the seat belt chime. Added Ultra-Gauge. Trailer hitch. Softopper. Replaced sun visors with slide out style. Toyota bed extender. Had Firestone Destinations and now Michelin LTX AT2 in stock size. More mods to come; Fog lights, locking storage in bed, intermittent wipers. Now looking for Radio/HU upgrade. and maybe a lift way down the road.
Hoping someone can help me out with my 09 TPMS issue.
This morning when leaving for work light came on right away (27 degrees out) and stayed on. Quick visual check at the corner stop appears all tires aired up. Once at work I confirm with gauge they are all pretty close. Adjust pressures anyway tried reset several times. During reset the light blinked three times with the third blink on it stays on. So maybe you'd say it blinked twice then came on a third time and stayed on. Shut everything down and tried a few minutes later with same results.
When I turn the ignition on the light comes on, blinks once and then stays on.

Anyone have ideas what the problem is ? Bad sensor ? I'm not seeing any codes on my UltraGauge.

Ultra gauge only reads engine ecu.
Will not pick up other controllers like abs, tpms, air bag etc.
Every time you play with that tpms button you change the low pressure threshold. You should never have to touch that for any reason.

Set all your tire pressures with a good gauge to 28psi. Start the truck up and let it run for a min. Then hit and hold the idiot button for the 3 flashes. Let the truck run for a min. Shut it off. Start it back up and go for a ride for a mile or 2. Shut the truck off.
Reset your tire pressures to 32psi. Go for another ride. If the light stays on then you could have a bad sensor sending a wrong psi or temp. You will need to get it to a dealer or someone that can run the system and check for the parameters.

Once it is repaired leave the button alone. Hehehehe.

If it's not flashing for like 30 seconds or so it usually means the system is reading the sensors. But I have seen cases of a ecu issue causing a steady light.
Start with the easy stuff first.
    Have fun.

Got it Mike. Thanks. All fixed now.
Not really understanding or agreeing with never touch it. The manual explains when to use the idiot button and how to use it. I've not had this problem in the past with adjusting the pressures and resetting the system.
That said my girlfriends 2012 Rav4 has a fifth sensor in the spare and when the spare went low the light came on. Aired up the spare and light went off. There is no reset button on the Rav4, at least the 2012.

Discount Tire got my system working again.
He said that the computer thought the button was stuck down, and he similarly said "don't mess with it, it doesn't work the way it's supposed to"

    Good for you Rich.
It's fine on how you want to use the manual. I've got three Toyota's that have never had that button pushed with new tires, rotate tires, flat tires. My threshold pressures are exactly where I set them years ago. To each their own.

Just remember that procedure if you get out of sync again.
