I have always been a fan of Samsung, until they started making cheap shit. Even my Samsung cable boxes were pieces of shit. I went through 4 of them in 3 years before demanding the cable company give me something different. Its true IMO, now you are only buying the name.

Every company now is making junk, I just had to replace a Panasonic 50' Plasma Flat screen that finally went out with a 60' Samsung LED TV. The craftsmanship for almost all electronics has gone down the drain, so I would say buy something that is affordable and expect to replace it in 5-10 years.

Yeah this pretty much sums it all up. I spoke to 2 different TV guys from 2 different Best Buy locations, they all said the same thing: TV quality sucks nowadays. Expect to replace it within a few years. And this goes for all TV brands and types.

How depressing. Maybe I should just let my parents continue using their 1980s Mitsubishi 55"...

We have a 40" Samsung LCD TV, 5 years old and never had a issue with it.
Some asked about Visio, we have a 32" that's 2 years old and haven't had any issues with that one either.

We had a Samsung home theater 5.1 that just plain sucked.
We could never hear the center channel no matter how loud we turned up the sound. We'd be asking each other "what did he say?" during movies.

    This.

The various companies realized that if they make a high quality product that lasts for years and years the market would become saturated and people wouldn't continue buying new TVs. It sucks, but its true.

I had a 50" Phillips that shit the bed after four years. One of the pixels went south (stayed red all the time) after about a year and a half too. I replaced it with a 50" LG about a year ago and no issues so far. Time will tell...

With a 70" recommended at 8.75' distance it seems hard to go to big even in my tiny 780 Ft2 townhouse.

If you like watching a Sherman Tank in your living room then the Mitsu DLP projection TV is what you need. Picture quality is horrendous compared to today's standards.

We live in a throwaway society. Manufacturers to turn a profit keep cutting corners by putting in the cheapest components they can source. If you want a TV to last look towards the upper end of a product line. Better components are sourced. If you don't care about having the latest and greatest buy one of the cheaper sets and when it craps prepare to trash it and go buy a new one. Expect 5 years out of the cheaper sets. If they last which alot do, Technology will do it in.

A great deal of electronics made between 2000 and 2009 had capacitor issues TV's mother boards etc. I just resurrected a nice Visio Plasma from the local dump I spent $3.14 for two caps for the power supply playing fine right now.

i have one of the early aquos tvs, ...circa 2003/2004, i bought it for a discount as a floor model at best buy ...it doesn't have the features that todays tvs do, but the "picture quality" (video processor) is outstanding, rivalling the best of the "new"...

    Same here.
I'm at 1100 sq/ft, but 2 floors so I'm roughly 550 per floor... but it's built like a mobile home. 17 or so ft wide and around 30ft long.
1st floor is split evenly, living room in the front and dining room/kitchen in the rear.

Yup. I have a 26" that I bought in '02 (when a 26" cost $1000 Haha), still works great. Better sound than most newer TVs I've heard. So impressed with it I bought a Quattron last spring and love it as well.
