How is your alternator going to supply power to the ECU?

All of the ancillary systems I have covered. Just don't know about the various ECU's since I just bought the truck.

he just wants a spare. when he finds which one he needs, I think he will have to take the truck and spare ecu to a dealer and have them reflash the ecu. other wise it wont start.

LOL, playing too much Modern Warfare 2?

I think all the ECUs are grounded/shielded against EMI and HIRF already. Maybe just install a grounding strap and call it a day?

    This.

Unless you live on or near a primary target.... military installation, government infrastructure hub, etc... you are not going to be targeted.

Nukes in the atmosphere? We used to blow them up all the time. There was one instance where it cause power outages in Japan... but it had no impact on personal electronics.

Do a little more research about EMP's before you buy anything.

As far as I understand it anything with a silicon chip in it can be toasted by this?

So you are talking about almost everything a wire goes to. Sensors, Gauges, Leds, abs TPMS and so on and so on.

And just remember your truck is a Faraday cage. It will protect you from lighting.

You would be better off buying a kick start scooter. An older one with no electronics.

Any CME that is strong enough to fry electronics on the surface is going to have other effects that will make electronics our last concern.

You should at least have a 4x4 so you can get through the debris and piles of bodies. Your Prerunner wouldnt fair well. I expect more from a Zobie Repsonse Team Leader.

Wikipedia has a decent rundown of the effects of a High Altitude Nuclear Explosion (HANE).

Fused telephone wires and fires at electrical plants sounds like good times.

Thing is though, even if you protect the ECU in your truck, what do you do about the other parts ? I can imagine burned out lights, motors, and sensors.

So you'd need to put the whole truck into a faraday cage, and then you run into the other problem. For starters, you have a truck that just sits there, because you never know when the Zombies are going to do a HANE.

But beyond that, at energy densities of 6.6 MW per square meter, you'll need to make sure that your truck doesn't somehow become the path to ground for your faraday cage of a size in the dozens of square meters it would take to cover it - which is unlikely, because that is a metric fuckton of power to deal with.

Anyway, the ECUs on the truck will likely be the least of your worries in that situation.

Not sure how well the Duramax conversion would fly in the FJ.
One of the guys on FSC did it in a GMT400 Suburban. It fit, but it would not have fit in a 1500 without a body lift. It required the taller 2500HD platform for clearance.

Interesting, that conversion answered an age-old question about the stock Duramax exhaust manifold. The driver side manifold had a slight "pinch" in it, and people speculated that it was needed for backpressure and all kinds of other nonsense. The Suburban retrofit revealed that the engine accessories were actually designed originally to fit the "OBS" or GMT-400 platform.
The "pinch" in the manifold was perfectly positioned to clear the steering column!

    Anyways, back to the FJ...
The easiest way to do the conversion is to keep the engine paired with the Ally... that solves some of the ECU/TCU issues.
That is a BIG combo and it's going to take a fair body lift and firewall modification to squeeze it in there.

    Save your money.

    Invest in guns and ammo.

If you put all that money into guns then when the shit hits the fan you just wait until you see some other sucker that hardened his car or had an older one. Then because you have lots of guns you just take what you want.

Personally I think if you are going to go the whole nine yards on this I would go with one of those military engines that can run on gas, diesel, kerosene, jet fuel or what ever. Then put it in a vehicle that can carry it.
