I just completed this on my 2012. Followed the OP's instructions, same blue wire with yellow tracer. Works perfectly. The images below show the lights which illuminate on the dash when the switch is on. The locker does not engage but the other functions are apparently activated (tires will spin and ABS does not work). :) Perfect.

Actually, I'd have to test it. Never tried before.

I just want to be sure of something that I didnt find while reading this thread. For a 2WD off road automatic w/ locker, does the locker still behave the same way as normal? Since the mod is to trick the ECU into thinking the locker is engaged, does that mess up the normal engagement of the locker? regardless of the lights, am I still able to engage and disengage the locker as normal with the factory button?

I would love to be able to turn off ABS the whole time while off-roading, but still be able to selectively enable the locker only for those tough climbs and such. I assume that since nobody has mentioned any problems or side effects this is not an issue, but i just wanted to be sure.

    Thanks

lol. stfu. it was a really warm winter for us. most the time we get 5+ snows. the year before last was pretty bad, even in the valley(where i am) had like 8” of snow and they stopped plowing some roads, because they are stupid. also unlike you guys we don’t have enough plows and equipment to clear the roads and keep them clear. 5+ counties ran out of salt and started using pegravle. in ’09/’10 and ’10/’11. also schools close if we even have a dusting of snow.

also that stupid slat brine mix stuff is BS and just makes the roads worse.

You have a 2WD truck with locker. This mod will enable you to drive around in 2WD with ABS disabled and locker NOT engaged. It would only take a fraction of a second to disable your ABS kill switch and enable the factory locker. That's what I would do. No risk of something going wrong that way. From what I remember studying the diagram, if you were to have your kill switch enabled and engage the factory locker, I don't think any harm would come to your ECU. I don't know if it would actually engage the locker though. Probably not. That's my guess.

This is what i am curious about, exactly what process do you go through when offroad and you want to intermittently use the locker. lets say you pull off road and kill the ABS which turns on all the dash lights, while on trail, you find a spot that is a bit tricky and you want to use the locker. is the sequence option 1 or 2?

    option 1
1)press factory locker button to engage locker (dash lights remain lit)
    2)drive through tricky spot
3)press factory locker button to disengage locker (lights remain lit ABS still disabled)

    option 2
1)flip ABS switch back to ON position (lights remain lit)
2)engage locker with factory button (lights remain lit)
    3)drive through tricky spot
    4)disengage locker
5)flip ABS switch back to OFF position

i could see step 5 being unnecessary since the circuit has already been grounded and the ECU will not reset without a power cycle anyways. if this is the way it behaves, you may be able to just cycle the ABS switch when pulling offroad instead of leaving it in the OFF position.

i believe we are thinking the same thing, since the ABS is disabled because the mod tricks it into thinking the locker is engaged, will it actually engage the locker when you press the factory button, or will it assume it is already engaged and do nothing? i would love to have the ability to kill ABS for off road or snow, but in an off road situation, i am also concerned with the ability to use the locker. needing to shut off the truck to reset the ECU to be able to operate it is not a desirable option. As long as i can do it with just the switches, thats fine by me, i am just wondering if anyone here has done this mod on this configuration before and can tell me how theirs behaves.

Neither of those options apply to my off-roading style. I have a 4x4. When my truck hits dirt the transfer case almost immediately shifts into 4HI. Sometimes but not always I'll engage the ABS kill switch. If it gets rough I'll shift to 4LO. Generally speaking 4WD decreases the necessity for a locker unless...the trail is tricky, or there is a dangerous section then I'll engage the locker.

The ABS kill switch can stay enabled in 2WD, 4HI, and 4LO. I've already stated this but I have not tried to keep the kill switch active and engage the locker--I don't think I'd try it either.

To be frank, I think you're over thinking this. It takes a fraction of a second to flip the switch, just flip the switch back! ;)

And to be frank with you, i dont quite think you understand what it is i am asking. I have absolutely no problem with the idea that i may have to flip the ABS switch back to ON and then engage the locker. My question is whether the locker will actually engage AT ALL since the truck will already think it is due to the mod. If it does not, the only way i can see to engage it is to turn the truck off and back on. That is not something i would prefer to do when im on a tricky spot on the trail. You say that i should just flip the switch back, but arent sure if that will even work. Thats what im trying to find out.

let me restate, is it possible to still engage and disengage the locker without power cycling the truck after you have flipped off ABS with this mod? If so, what steps are necessary to do it?

If you have a different configuration on your truck and do not know the answer to my question, thats fine, i am hoping to hear from someone who does.

That's possible, but maybe it's your choice of wording too. I'm going to try and help you in this post and after that, I'm parting from this discussion. Okay?

You have it backwards. You would turn the ABS switch to OFF, then engage the locker. Cycling the ignition is completely unnecessary with this mod. [I'll give an example below]

No disrespect, but to me that is entirely a new question. Your original question, to paraphrase was: can you have the ABS kill switch active and still [mechanically] lock the rear diff with the factory button. As far as I know nobody has tried that.

My advice to you is this: perform this simple mod if you wish to have an ABS kill switch. Go off-roading and have fun [with your ABS kill switch ON]. If you want to lock the rear diff due to rough terrain, need more traction, etc. Flip the ABS kill swith to OFF, then mechanically lock your diff using the factory button. No cycling of the ignition is required! When you're done with the rough terrain, unlcok the rear diff and active your ABS kill switch. That's it. That's what I would do given your trucks configuration. Hopefully that makes sense.

Hopefully that helps. Good luck!

I know I am way late from the original opening of this thread, but I wanted to post a reply to the original opening statement. The reason Toyota did not put this mod in was because they would have violated the law on ABS system. The ABS system MUST be operable at all times, with the exception that was given for when a locker is engaged (Hence the Toyota system that was put in place) That is why Toyota did not give you this mod from the factory. Personally I like my ABS system. I have never had it cause me any problems off-road or on, and I have driven in all types of weather. Perhaps it is just that I drive with a different style than those who have had problems (Exception given of course to those who drive down washboard type roads, I can get that) Regardless though, the ABS system does it's intended job: Allowing you to have better control when in a panic-type stop, or on uneven surfaces. Yes, it does in some situations extend your stopping distance, however you will have better control of your vehicle. Just putting in my $.02 worth.

I understand the laws for ABS but there are times that I would rather have it off. Non-panic situations like offroading, or my personal experience driving on freshly snowed roads, the plow trucks cleared the main lanes but the shared turning lane was built up with snow. I slowed before safely entering the turning lane and was doing a minimal speed trying to stop to make a turn. The ABS kicked on and refused to stop my truck, so i am just slowly sliding forward with my brake pedal pulsing out of control. In this instance I would have liked to reach up and turned it off and safely stopped. I tried pulsing the brake pedal among other things to make it turn and it wouldn't. I just ended up unsafely making the turn because I couldn't stop.

btw I read your comment because I blocked your sig ;)

I refrained yesterday from addressing your post hoping that it would just get ignored but now that someone has replied with a counter opinion I feel it necessary to respond. In this particular instance I can tell you didn't read the OP, because the last line in the OP clearly states this:

I would hope that most people would catch the extra large text and think twice about ignoring it. The purpose of that statement was my attempt to keep the discussion on topic which is how to perform this mod on the truck.

I recommend that you go start your own thread about the merits of the ABS system and how much you personally like. I surmise that you'll have a lively dialog with many individuals with many different viewpoints--it will be fun. I'd even like to participate in such a thread.

Thanks for your consideration and thanks for reading. :D

Interesting how I simply supplied information and in no way did I call fault to you, or your post. I was not trying to "flame" or "trash" anything. Merely posted information. And even then said it was a matter of opinion (Hence the "$.02 worth" comment). And I even answered your specific question about why Toyota didn't include this mod. relax and untwist man. No harm was intended.
