My only knowledge of gold exploration is from that show on I think Discovery about Alaskan gold prospectors. LOL guessing it's about as "real" as Black Gold is about the oil fields.

The only reason I'm on this rig is because one of our new guys couldn't hack it, he walked off the rig in the middle of his shift. Don't think for a second I didn't let him know a girl took his place :D

Geologist is one of the easier jobs on a rig. Being a derrick hand looks like my personal version of hell. That's a long way down!!

iv watched black gold a few times and its pretty funny... they do exaggerate a bit on sum things but iv worked on sum rigs back in 05-08 where all kinds of crazy shit happend.. fingers gone, a guy got cruched rite next to me and died later on in the hospital.. and as far as the partying and drugs & being up all night all the time! but on black gold they only work 8 hour shifts(pussys) and drill with water... funny tho, i like watching tho rednecks get hurt for the camera man:)

Well since the thread is already here..
Im also in search of/cant find a job in the oil and natural gas industry... Im only looking for a summer internship type of thing and i have applied all over WV and nobody seems to want to talk to me. I feel like if you dont know someone in the company that you wont get in. That part sucks. Im in my third year in the geology program at WVU and was hoping to be in the industry by now...

It's a cool job. You start out 12 hour shifts working nights and if you're a little good and a little lucky your reward is a 12-hour day shift and being on call to help your night hand if something goes wrong or he's not confident he's right. If your night hand is good, you get decent sleep. If not, you work 20-hour days. It can be pretty stressful, if you're geosteering a well it's your responsibility to make sure we're drilling where we should. There's nothing like calling your customer, waking him up at 2:30 in the morning to deliver bad news! And it's inevitable, at some point you will deliver bad news like that.

It's a lot of fun though, lots of good times on the rig, and lots of crazy stories. The geologists (at energy companies) who hire us are usually excellent to work with. It's the first job I've had where I really get treated professionally by pretty much everyone I work with. The only real problems I've had are with older directional drillers who don't like youngish women working with them. Otherwise you just learn to talk shit and don't ever act offended, even if you are.

Oh. And you work hard for the geologist who hired you, because if they're cool with you they'll move mountains to help you out. One of them even straight up told me he'd rather fire a directional driller than find a new wellsite geologist. It's good to be high in the pecking order. :D

Hey yall sorry to bump this ooooold thread but im looking to get into the oil biz. Life in North Fort Worth TX. Happy to do anything if the pay is right. Id really like to do this for a couple years and stuff some money away for retirment, a home, and to finish out whatever college goals i may have. Ill be 21 in a month, no baggage, and am used to 12 hour shifts and little sleep. I just dont know where to start? Im used to applying the old way. "showing up to a office" but all the work is south and west. What websites should i visit or does anyone know anyone who could help me out?

Anyone know anything about gas lifts? I'm meeting a guy looking to hire for gas lifts. The job is a lot of work, and a lot of time on the road. He flat out told me it has a low retention rate, but can pay pretty well and can lead to other things in the company or the industry. I'm interested, but proceeding with caution.

Its a field/maintenance job. But I'm hoping to use it to get into the industry. I have a degree, I'm an ex military officer, recent job was a construction project manager/sales manager.

You say that... "short term", it's just like saying "life time" in the oilfield. I see a lot of people come and go, then come back just due to the money and benefits

Ran across this thread and thought I might get some input. I have 0 experience in anything oil or gas field related, but would like to leave my current industry and location and start over. No strings and could move at a moments notice. Quick to learn and one class away from my Bachelors. Any advice on jobs or companies would be appreciated.
