I'd say it depends on what barrel it comes with vs. what you will do with it.
    both are good shotguns!

870 all the way. The mossy is not a bad gun by any means, but I much prefer the feel and safety placement on my 870.

the reason i like the mossberg safety location is because its in your LOS as you level the gun...easy to see...plus it takes little to no effort to click it on and off with your thumb without losing your grip on the shotgun

    Winchester 1300?

They are all good shotguns, It really comes down to what feels good to you.

Check out big 5 they usually have a sale on the mossberg 500, it comes with 2 barrels, 18.5 and a 26

They have it for sale this week for 279.

Edit: just realized they don't have a big 5 where you live.

X2 on this one. I have one as well and love it. Great action and a ton of accessories to add to it.

I like both shotguns. I have an 870 with a pistol grip, folding stock, extended mag tube, and 18 inch bbl, but I would have bought a mossberg if I had found a deal on one just as readily. Both great shotguns.

i agree that the pistol grip will make the 870s safety placement much better...HOWEVER a shotgun shouldnt be your primary home defense gun...a shotgun should be your last line of defense...for when the shtf type of deal...

no...racking it to scare someone is silly...and you cant sufficiently move about in a building with a shotgun either...its too easy to give away your position with one...

I have both and I personally would go with the mossberg 500. I own one and I carried and used one in the army. Super reliable and simple. I have also seen a bunch of accesories for it so you can pretty much customize it how ever you want. Im sure the 870 has alot out there too but no where near the options of the 500.

Reviving an old thread, I know, but why the distinction between uses? I'm looking at the 2 combo packages for these guns now. Both come with slug and field barrels, similar in price (within $30, Mossberg being a little cheaper) and having trouble making the final decision. Primary use will be hunting and target shooting (and home defense if it comes to it but I live in a safe area so that's low on the list or priorities). It will be my first shotgun if it matters.

If you are wanting a cheap reliable shotgun, you might want to look at the H&R Pardner Protector. This is an 18" copy of the 870, and H&R is a subsidiary of Remington. Most of the aftermarket parts from an 870 will fit on the H&R gun. I think the only thing that doesnt fit on the H&R gun is the 870 barrel, and that can be fitted if you absolutely have to. The Pardner pump can be found anywhere for 179-229.00.

Thanks, I'll check it out. I'm not as concerned with cheap, but I would like reliable and versatile. Being my first shot gun, I don't want to spend a ton, but I like the combo packs because of the dual barrels. I can pick up the combo back for about $370ish for the Remington and $340ish for the Mossberg. I plan to go to the gun shop and see which one fits the best but was wondering why Zombie Runner made the distinction between the 2 for hunting and home defense.

The 500 is known to have shell feeding issues between the magazine and chamber... I have put over 5000 shells threw mine and have just started seeing that. Otherwise it has been a very solid weapon!

depends on what your going to hunt.. you can use ether with a smoothbore barrel for deer and turkey plus small game but if your looking at mainly big game or whitetail get a rifled version. i believe both manufacturers have them

-i have a remington 870 turkey gun and absolutely love it. 2 seasons with it and 4 birds. remington makes some DAMN fine guns!

edit- here it is getting ready for deer season, with an open choke i can group slugs decent at 100 yards, enough i would feel confident on a big game animal. with full choke buckshot is deadly to around 70. turkey extra full choke takes the head off at 60, ive done it. and that was with regular winchester ammo not the hevishot.

Pugga, take a look at ithaca model 37's. I have one that was my first shotgun and it has a field barrel and a slug barrel. Its a really nice gun and I've never had any issues with it. Im not sure what they run these days as I've had mine for 15 years.

They are both good guns as well as the Ithaca. I carried an 870 in CG but have a Mossberg and like the saftey location on the Moss better but that is all personal pref. I have used the Ithaca Deer Slayer which had a good feel and was also reliable but also has the triggerguard saftey.

Yikes, those Ithacas are about double the price of the 870 and the 500. Maybe when I grow up but I think if I'm going to spend that kind of money I'll be looking at Benelli or Browning. I don't doubt they're a good firearm, just a little more than I want to spend at the moment. The bottom ejection is a nice feature though.
