    Hi Guys,

    New on the forums here.

I've done some decent research and Im trying to see if it is best to replace just the two front wheel bearings or the hubs all together? Ive seen the DIY videos on replacement and the need of a press, but I am just wondering if it is easier to replace the whole hub versus just bearing?

Would this be something worth buying and doing it myself?

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/1New-DTA-Fr...2005|Model:Tacoma&hash=item1e712ef868&vxp=mtr

Any help or feedback would be much appreciated!

When I replaced mine I just ordered two from rockauto n had a shop pry the old ones off n press the new ones in. Thats just the bearing btw not the whole hub assembly

So there is no way to just replace the bearing without pressing it out? This looks like a plug a play piece but I guess I could be wrong. haha

    Thanks for the response.

It's lacking the hub, if you find one with a hub, then yes.

So there is no way to buy this part and then just bolt it directly on to my existing hub?

Gotcha. Thanks for clearing it up for me.

Any recommendations for a good set of bearings at a decent price? Maybe on the forums or online?

if you could afford the extra 180$ per side it would be worth it to get new hubs with wheel stubs, type v oil seal and 4 new bolts along with the bearing/block . get them pressed together and you can swap out bearing/hub assemblys at will. that is of course for 4wd . 2wd hub/bearings are a little more trickey and it would be worth taking the assembly off and bringing it to someone with the proper tools.

So this wheel bearing unit already has the actually bearing in it though? Not just the unit that holds the wheel bearing? haha

Rather than the old style bearings that ride on a spindle, our bearings are "unit bearings". They're unitized and the bearings ride in their own housing.

You can read a little more about it here.

    http://www.4wheeloffroad.com/techarticles/drivetrain/131_0805_4x4_truck_unit_bearing_system/

    http://www.off-roadweb.com/tech/1004or_unit_bearings_versus_rebuildable_hubs/viewall.html

This isn't a Taco wheel bearing and hub but it gives you an idea.

The hub (right) presses into the unit bearing (left). They also have a couple races pulled out so you can see how it all goes together. So on ours you'll need to separate the old bearing from the hub, and then press the new bearing onto the hub. You can see the same thing kinda in your link. 5 and 2. http://www.trademotion.com/media/images/oe/collision/8/8512275.gif

There are write-ups available around here somewhere.

I would replace inner and outer oil seals as well. I opted to re-use the o-rings myself, as they're simple o-rings and showed no signs of deformation or cracking.

Haha So there are inner and outer bearing seals? I only saw one set?

I am currently looking at moog and timken for the actually bearings.
