I'll be setting up a briefing with TMO tomorrow but just thought I'd ask here and see if anyone knew the answer off the top of their head.

I'll be doing a full-dity move after I graduate tech school in 2.5 weeks. I have an apartment's worth of stuff back at my HOR in NC. TMO already told me the Govt would do everything for me BUT someone would have to be there to unpack everything I've already packed and take it out of storage. I figure since I'd have to be there anyway I might as well move it myself and make a little $$ off the trip.

I'll be taking about 2 weeks worth of leave after tech school as well but to visit my family in Louisiana.

Question is: Is it possible to do the dity move as two separate trips? What I want to do is go to Louisiana for a few days after graduation (on leave), then drive to NC and uhaul everything back to Louisiana and stay there for another ~5 days (on leave) until I need to leave to head to my next duty station. Everything that will be weighed and in the truck/uhaul will go with me to the base.

Or should I just plan on using the days at the end of my leave + travel time to do the trip as one haul.

My next duty station is Mt Home ID. I'm single, no dependents, nothin. Just me and the road. :D

you should be able to do it in two trips but keep in mind, the govt pays you per pound per mile based on your pay grade. you can drive clear out of the way if you want, but the mileage they figure out will be the least amount of miles.

the only issue i could forsee is you taking leave in route. TMO may look at it like you are stopping for a vacation, family visit, etc, and expecting them to pay for your travel expenses to do it by using the DITY/PPM to cover the cost of your stop, especially if its "out of the way".

without getting into your personal business, why two seperate trips to louisiana? could you just go there after tech school graduation, then head to NC and get your stuff and move? after you talk with TMO, they may limit what you can do and still get paid for it. looks like your single so the DITY should be pretty painless. I moved my family on our last PCS and holy hell was it in a PITA. still well worth it as i made a couple grand though. save ALL your receipts for everything, and i mean EVERYTHING. find out what your max allowed weight is and when you get weighed, ensure you are that weight. im not condoning any illegal activity, but its in your best interest to max out what your uhaul weighs. if you weigh half of what you're allowed and the cost of uhaul rental and fuel, you may be paying out of pocket or getting far less than you expect to see.

also, when you get to your next base and fill out your travel voucher for your hotel and per diem expenses, ensure you check the DLA box in the top right. Alot of people don't know they are qualified to get it but a PCS entitles you to it and i think it was an extra $2K when i got my move money. good luck, come back with any more questions you may have. www.move.mil was kind of helpful as to at least estimating what you can anticipate getting for your move.

10-4. I thought making the two trips would make the trip less monotonous and a little easier. But I could see how it would look a little weird doing it that way. The more I think about it the more it makes sense to just do the whole trip at once at the end of my leave.

Yeah I'm planning on maxing out my weight, legally of course. My weight limit is 5000lbs so I'll be as close to that as I can.

The guy at TMO told me to check out move.mil before I came back to schedule my briefing. I set up an account and was able to get an estimate of what I would make off the move. If I max out my weight I should make about $2k off the move, not including mileage and per diem.

are you towing your tacoma? what sort of set up do you have on your truck? with 5K as your weight limit, I would be getting a uhaul trailer and towing it rather than renting a truck and a trailer.

Just so you know, a trailer/tow dolly and insurance is not covered or factored in to the TMO equations. If you have a V6 with tow package, you've got a 6500 tow capacity (you probably know this stuff). I'd get an enclosed trailer and tow it. I drove a 26 foot Penske truck and towed my wifes car when we PCSed and even it being a diesel, the fuel cost and truck rental can eat into what you'll make pretty quickly.

No. I'll be driving the Tacoma and pulling a uhaul, probably the 5'x8' enclosed. I've got the OR edition with tow package. I've got a lift and some 285's on but I'm still getting pretty good gas mileage (~20) on the highways.

I just found this and saw you were at sheppard. I wished I would have seen this sooner and we could have met up before you head out.
When I did my dity from Mt home back to wichita I had my double cab loaded to the brim and I had just over 1,000 pounds packed. A Uhual will be a must. Id make one trip if possible. I couldnt imagine making back to back cross country trips. Thats a lot of gas and hotels!

10-4. Yeah I've decided to just make one big trip after my leave is up after Christmas and drive from Louisiana to my HOR in NC then load everything up and head to Mt Home.

Are you currently in WF? I've got two more weeks here before I graduate. If you've seen a lifted maroon tacoma ac driving around that's me lol.

Which way will you be going to Mt Home through? If through this area, let me know. I'll hook you up with a room depending on when you come through.

just make sure that if you do tow it, dont do the tow dolly. i did it with my 04 taco for my dity and it tore the hell out of my steering rack bushings. plus the tie downs have to be "rigged" to accommodate larger tires. if you can, get the biggest enclosed trailer they have (that you can safely tow) and do it that way. driving that big ass uhaul with your truck pulled behind it was absolutely horrible...

If ur single with no dependants they'll probably stick you in the dorms. Our dorms can barley fit a bed and a desk, so IMO i wouldn't bring a uhaul full.

Not sure yet. I've got a cousin in Denver that I'll probably stop and see on the way. I'm not sure which routes are the best or if one way is better in the winter.

Definitely. I'm going to get the 5x8 enclosed trailer. I think that's my best option for the price.

x2 I didnt think about that. if your not married then I wouldnt even bother with moving anything other than what you can fit in your truck. The doorms are fully furnished.

X2 on that. I would look into selling your old stuff if not wanting to keep paying for the storage unit. You more than likely won't move out of the dorms for another 2 years (give or take 6 months). I would recommend calling your sponsor and giving him your position on things (I'm 28, been living on my own for a while, would love to move out on my own... etc etc.) They may have a dry dorm rule out there since you are going to bomber country.

Unless you want to rent a storage unit and store your stuff in it untill you hit SrA then I wouldnt bother with it. If you put in for Korea you could be out of there in a year. I was at langley for 7 months and got orders out of there and left at my 13th month being there. You wont hit SrA till what, 3 years?

My room here at McConnell wasn't bad 10 years ago. Was big enough for my bed, dresser, tv stand (came with room) and an extra couch. Shared the bathroom with the guy next door. The dorms have been changing slightly the past few years. Some have shared living areas with 4 people to the section but you have your own room. Shared kitchens, etc.

mtn homes doorms arent too small, well depends on which building you are in. some are real small, mine was decent. iirc the maintenance dorms were the small ones.

honestly the only "large" items id take would be a TV, stereo, and computer

At langley you got your own room but had a shared kitchen and bathroom with one other guy.

at kunsan you had your own room but shared kitchen and living room with 4 other dudes. Super nice dorms. when I first got there though we lived in a shit hole right on the flight line and had no AC...
