How long until the new wears off

I have had my truck almost a year now and it has a little over 13k miles on it. I am still treating it like a new truck where I worry about scratching it and I wont let my kids eat or drink inside it. I think it is lessening my enjoyment of the truck. I am not sure I can just turn it off and say "OK, it is not new any more so it is OK if it gets a scratch or a spill takes place".

Any of the rest of you go through this? How long did it take to get past it?

 

I was absolutely pissed the night when two rocks put two dings in my hood...the next morning I got up and said...ah..its a truck...at first I was very crazy about getting it fixed..but now..eh..since its not thru the primer..its all good lol

The two dents in the tailgate REALLY made me say screw it

 

I'm the same way...ha..I live in Shelby...must be something in the water! I washed and waxed it real good about 3 months ago and vacuum it when needed, but I'm easing up on the watch. I still can't stand to get into tight parking spots. Also the kids are grown...so that is no worry. My last tacoma I kept until Feb of this year...it was a '96 4x4 extra cab 6 cylinder. When my older son took bought it from me...it still looked extra clean, top and bottom. 230,000 miles...running great. I believe it is a mindset that I just decided if trks cost this much...Im not gonna buy one every 5 years.. ;-)

 

Maybe I need a good dent or two somewhere to help me get over it.....

 

My last tacoma I had for over a year and I still babied it. I parked away from everyone. I would fix a rock chip as soon as it would happen. I've had my new Tacoma for 2 weeks now and I am just the same. I got a rock chip 48 hours after I got the truck and I fixed it right then. I think that everyone is different. Some people will baby their vehicles longer than others.

 

lol.,.. I remember that feeling. Sounds like you have few scratches and chips to go before its over. ...just pour some coffee on the passenger seat and get it over with ...

 

haha I didn't feel comfortable in it until the new was wore off

Once my tacoma got keyed was when the "screw it" set in

 

one week old truck. i pulled it up to the rancher that gave us permission to hunt. (for some $$)..he said..you are going to destroy your shiney new truck.

going up a long rocky hill in 4low..i came to a loud halt. i hit a 15 foot long piece of water well tubing, bent it, and punched it through my shiney new truck bed. it lifted me up into the air, and left my wheels spinning in the air. cant remember how we got out, but i do remember rocking the truck to make the hole oblong.

that new truck perspective is all relative. just drive it.

 

And you sir are the one I would want to by my next truck from. My '05 was owned by a person such as you and the truck is immaculate at 88k miles. It has a couple little dings but all in all very nice. Also the maintenance schedules were done on time, every 5k miles Mobil 1 at the dealer.

 

Yeah! I am anal about everything to when it comes to my truck. It's too bad that not everyone is like me. I have friends who are the exact opposite then me and it drives me crazy. I'm sure that there are others like me on this board who take pride in their vehicles.

 

I wheeled for 15 years with jeeps, I destroyed a bran new Jeep wanted to trade it in, and no one wanted it because I wheeled with it, then it got stolen, I was so lucky...

After that I decided to keep the wheeling to ATV/UTV Sport vehicals that I don't give a shit.

I don't even get scratches in my bed, the trucks I keep are shiny as day one, and makes trading them in on new rides or selling much easier.

I tow a RZR 900 XP and RZR 800 50" that will go places only Tacos dream of and be a whole heck of a lot more fun.

My Taco is a mall crawler toy hauler, it might hit fire trails or some easy trails to camp sites, only to unleash my toys.

I have a 2013 TRD Sport that I plan on trading in on a 3rd gen when they come out, already have a date with the Toyota dealer and have discussed it with them.

 

I had a 98 Grand Cherokee before this. It ran great but it was a beater. A guy hit me and bent up the driver's side front fender. I pull it back out myself and hit it with a rattle can and pocketed the $1,400 from the insurance company. It was great because I did not care if it got scratched or beat up. I gave that Jeep to one of my older kids and he is still driving it.

I am not sure I will ever feel that way about the Taco, maybe once it is paid for.....

 

I used to take my new truck, or Jeep, out the day I bought it and get some brush scratches on it. Get it stuck and call it broke-in. Don't plan to do that with my 2013 DCSB TRD OR that is due in in two weeks.

 

bought mine used so it was pre-scratched a little

took it out on the trail the next day and caught some branches and put some light marks in the paint all down the side. New (to me) truck problem solved

 

My first pinstripes not long into owning it made me say "screw it!"

 

When I realized I had to hack up my splash guards to fit my 33"s...

And then after the first pinstripes, it was all over.

 

I was doing fine in "my baby" mode. Then my wife backed into a tree and suddenly it was gone - it was a good 7 months though.

 

After the first trail damage, "screw it" mode set in.
