I guess I should come around here more often. Work in Sandy and live in Taylorsville. Have seen a couple trucks around from the site and one that lives pretty close to my. 05-09 Access cab, black. Commutes from Taylorsville by my house, same freeway entrance to the same exit, within a block of my work. Are there any meets around the valley not crawling, just BS meets or anything? Any plans for new meets with the snow?

    Hey guys!

I'm new to TW and a proud new owner of a 2013 DCSB TRD O/R and I'm itching to hit up some trails. I've lived in UT for many years but haven't had a truck while living in UT so I don't know too much about the trails around the SLC area. I've read on here about the trails up AF canyon and out at 5 mile pass but I'm hesitant to go out alone and especially with a stock vehicle. Since I found TW, I've been dreaming about lifts and tires but it probably won't happen for several more months/years. So I have some questions:

    1. Can a stock O/R handle some of the trails up AF Canyon (Forrest Lake, etc.) and out at 5 mile pass?
    2. I've been reading about lifts like crazy and I'm more confused than ever. Some lifts seem good for off-roading and others are more for show. I want a practical lift that will ride well on and off road, accommodate 33" tires w/o rubbing or trimming, provide enough ground clearance for some intermediate trails, and not break the bank (aka thousands of dollars). What do you guys recommend? I've read about RCD lifts, Bilstein 5100s, Coilovers, Spacers, etc.
    3. Also, what are some good 4x4 shops in the SLC area that provide parts and service? I don't have the tools or the expertise to do a lift.

Thanks for listening to the newbie!

I would get a lift or some armor before you go out to those places man. However, there are a quite a few of us who can help you out with putting on the lift ect.. personally I like the 3" with 33in tires.

    Welcome to the site man

I have gone on a couple runs up AF canyon and Rattlesnake and I have a stock 1st gen. So you could do it for sure! You will have so much fun, this is a great group of people that go out on trail runs.

Thanks for the welcome and the reply.

I did upgrade the skid plate to the trd skid plate... how much protection does that provide? What other armor should I consider?

Does that OME lift kit require new UCAs?

It doesn't require new UCAs up front. With a new truck, they can probably get a pretty good alignment with the Stock UCAs.

But eventually, you'll get enough wear that you'll need new UCAs for caster especially. I'm at that point right now, 2010 DC TRDOR with the 3" OME lift. Last alignment on stock UCAs was sad. So I'm saving up for new ones.

no need for new ucas. If you want 33in tires you'll need new wheel with atleast a 4.5mm offset to avoid rubbing on them. (unless you get spacers)

I know that the first time I went out was to five mile and all I had armor wise was a 3/16" IFS skid plate but I didn't need it. I had all stock suspension and bald tires and we were in the snow. I did fine except the one hill I almost rolled on because the bald tires.

For what you are thinking I would go with Bilstein 5100s with your choice of springs, or a full OME kit. I'm not sure about shops but if you want a shop to do it I would still recommend you get the parts yourself. There are a lot of good deals on here.

Custom sliders, Bilstien 5100s in front - 5100's + AAL + TSB in rear, dif drop, LED's in scoop, CB installed in console, flashlight mount, window tint, locking compartment in bed.
    Nate,
To throw another voice into the conversation for you; I am in a '11 DBLCB and I have the Billstien 5100s all around and a AAL (Add a Leaf) in the rear. This gives me about 2-3 inches of lift without altering too much. Still running stock tires/wheels. Like Nat said, she was able to ride on near stock but you are risking a dent if you are not careful.

For me, the lift is best/great but you will spend some cash between the lift itself and then adding wheels and tires ($$$$). You wont put 33's on the stock rims. If you are wanting to play around a bit before you go that route the best money I've spend so far is rock sliders. This protects your doors as you come around and off rocks. You can usually deal with the clearance issues by choosing the right line. That usually means "put your wheel on the rock", rather then drive over it. When you come off you want to protect that body. There are a bunch of options for sliders. Some do it at home, others order from some really reputable fabrication shops that frequent TacomaWorld and others go with a smaller shop to build them. I bought mine from a guy in Ogden (Trail Ridge). Great price, fast delivery, good guy and they are solid. Ive leaned on them a few times and I trust them.

Welcome! Its awesome to have a couple more locals to join the fun. I feel like a newb most times and I am always impressed with all the Utah members. Real solid people. Just jump in and go. We can find a place for you.

Welcome Nate. At first you don't need a lift to get up some trails in AF. There's some really easy ones that you could go by yourself. But as of forest lake, mineral basin, and 5 mile you can not make it. Well you can in some but you will scratch the belly and bumpers. Also expect pin striping up in AF. You can't avoid that. The best thing to do is a 3 inch lift and you can keep your stocks. 285/75R17 are close to 33 inch tires and you can find specers In The forum for pretty cheap. Also for armor get sliders first, bumpers are cheap camparing to damaging the cab. Take off the mud flaps then you go off road so you don't brake them. And sense your in Lehi the closes toyota parts store for you is lowrangeoffroad.com . They only sell gear for Tacomas and Suzuki's

Adding to the above, Rock sliders are definitely a good investment. I got mine from BAMF on here and he just had a 30% off sale. Pin striping is expected most of the places we go. If you look at my truck it's just all pinstriping down the sides. I would not recommend a spacer lift.

My recommendation money-wise is to get the lift first, then the sliders, and then the wheels and tires.

    Nate:
Your "stock" OR can go ANYWHERE with it's locker. Of course armor and lift help, but so does a good spotter.
AllProOffroad.com for armor/suspension (I'm biased, my 2005 DCSB was fully decked out with All-Pro, running 35's with a 3" coilover setup in front)

I have a friend who is selling some sliders that would fit your '13 Taco Nate. Would be glad to meet you up if you're interested in them. Freshly powdercoated black.

Also a question for you locals, I have some wheel spacers and about a 3 inch lift.. Could I fit 285/65/18's on my 2nd gen? I love the look of the 285 and found some cheap but I don't want to cut or anything..

Also for Static, what bumper cover is that you're using? Is that a replacement bumper or is it just armored around the factory bumper? I have an OR and just got my chrome bumper painted and don't want to lose it, but I want to cover/protect it

You guys are awesome! Thanks for all the info... this is really helpful.

Just one more quick question... if I went with the Bilstein 5100s, do I need a diff drop?

StaticFilter - that is a good looking truck!
