New to the Tacoma world, just bought a bright red 2005 Tacoma TRD off road double cab with a cap. I really want to paint the wheels this weekend, but cannot decide on color. Im thinking either semi gloss black or if I can find a gun metal doing that (the inner part of the grill is gun metal so to kinda match). Ive seen alot of black wheels but have not found a red truck with gun metal wheels? Any opinions/suggestions?

I think gunmetal would look good with red. Just try it and see, you can always repaint them.

If I were to paint my wheels black I'd go either satin or matte, not semi-gloss but that's just personal preference. Bronze looks good on red also.

Definitely try the gunmetal black, if that doesn't work fix it up with some Matte black.

Dupli-Color Engine Enamel Low Gloss Black (DE1634) over self-etching primer. Had to do a little respray to fix a few chips & scuffs from them sliding around in the bed when my bed divider came loose (and from Les Schwab mounting my new snow tires to the rims). Have to see what the long-term durability is.

Plasti-dip, even more durable then paint, or at least from my experience, resistant to rock chips.

That and you have a new color every week if you wanted to. Easy to remove.

Im thinking Im gonna try the Gun metal first, if I dont like it then ill paint over it with black. I dont feel like paying for powder coating them, so rattle can will do me just fine.

I also thought about plasti-dip but these rims really need to be sanded down and refinished. My goal is just to make them look good enough to keep me satisfied until I can afford real rims:D

The nice thing about a cheap spraypaint job is how easy it is to touch up or do over with something else if you don't like it or just want to try something else.

Do you spray paint the wheels only after mounting the tires?

I primed & painted mine before tires. They got a bit banged up sliding around in the bed when my bed bar came loose. I touched up that damage & a few dings that got put on em at the tire place easily afterwards.

I had to mask off the Toyota symbol (hand painted it deep red) and the lugnuts (forgot to hand the ones I painted black to the tire guy to put on instead of the chrome ones).

You could do it either way. Before tires + touchup might be a bit better, but not much.
