I would look at all the other brands of full size trucks with their claims of over 24 mpg's since the power isn't your issue. The tundra just doesn't get good fuel mileage and don't believe everything that is put on the Internet on fuel mileage. My friend had a 03 and a 07 tundra both avg 14.5. Yes, he did get 19 hwy once on the 07.
But if you really want one go buy one. They are nice trucks for light duty.

I didn't read everyone else's opinions, but here are mine:

    1. Tacoma is easier to park everywhere (esp. the garage if you have one).
    2. If you get 16-17mpg on something that is supposed to get 19-20, you will probably only get 13-14 on something that is rated for 16-17. It's not your truck, it's the way you drive (that's not meant to be an insult, just a statement.).
    3. Tundra will depreciate faster
    4. You won't get THAT much more room. It's still a truck.

My wife wanted me to get Tundra instead of the Tacoma. I actually paid more up front for the Tacoma than I would have paid for a Tundra based on the deals they were running at the time. I figured with insurance and gas, I would save thousands over the life of the truck by getting the Tacoma. Not to mention the reasons stated above.

My vote is to keep the Tacoma or get a 4Runner. The only reason I wouldn't get an FJ is because it doesn't have full size back seat doors.

+1 on a rollup (or other style) tonneau cover and bed extender. These were the best additions to my truck. Groceries don't slide all over the bed plus it is very useful in tons of other situations.

I know that does not solve all problems but it is a start if you really like your Tacoma, and does not cost a whole lot.

For those that suggested FJ among other vehicles. Isn't it more cramped and less comfortable than a DC Tacoma? Plus I would think those reverse hindged doors will be a pain for family vehicle. Anyway not bashing FJ's at all, just curious myself. Everytime I sat in one that was my impression.

There claims are for the base engine with a base truck 2x4 and no crew or double cab models either. When you see those commercials making that claim look on the very bottom of the TV in small letters stating its base vehicle with base engine.

I have a double cab with a tri-fold tonneau cover and a cargo net in the back and space is never an issue. I have two kids still in booster seats. An access cab would be a little harder but if you can get the car seat in there comfortably then I would not let space for groceries make me trade. You have a huge truck (bed) that you can use for that with a few addons.

Ive had no problems getting groceris in the back seat with my child seat and bag back there. put the bag in the floor below the car seat. stack groceries in the other seats and empty floor space.

if you want a full size Id have to pick the F150 over the tundra. The back seat on the new F150s is massive. My boss just got a new one and its pretty damn nice.

I have a little one with a rear facing car seat, and that's the main reason I got the Tacoma. Plenty of room for the carseat, leg room, diaper bag, etc...

Also, I own a restaurant and do grocery shopping in the THOUSANDS of dollars range when it's our season, and the bed of the truck will supply me ample amount of room. If it's going to rain, I plan on strapping on a tarp, or maybe getting a roll up cover...

I do have the double cab, extended bed though... I didn't notice which model Taco you said you had though...

The 25 mpg dodge's are an exception. Their 4.7L is the base engine, and the 3.5 Pentastar that gets the numbers costs extra.

Tundra mileage isn't great but it isn't as bad as some here have said. My dad usually averages 15-16 and he drives like Mario Andretti (which is sometimes scary with the 5.7). I personally did break 20 mpg with it but only once. Normally I wind up not quite making 19 mpg, but then again I drive quite conservatively. If it gets more than 10k miles a year I'd seriously consider an ecoboost instead.

With a trailer, forget it and buy diesel. 8-10 mpg with a lightweight travel trailer (I averaged 11.9 the one trip I drove it) and with a lightweight fifth figure about 8 mpg at 55 mph, 4-5 mpg at 70 mph. Never really lacking in power though...

I'd get the Tundra if I could afford it just because it's so much better built than the Tacoma in every aspect. That, and with the extended cab it's so beastly wide I can lay on the rear seat without needing to fold to get away from either door.

Pretty close for similiar equipment. They are good trucks. #1 selling vehicle in America (by wide margin) since forever.

Much bigger, much heavier, no standard, costs more to insure, don't really gain that much room, worse fuel mileage, more expensive services but if you think need a bigger truck go for it I have no issues caring stuff in my extra cab. I agree if you want big get a Ford 150 or 250 4 door they are huge got more room in the back seat then an old Checker cab.

I came from a Tundra. I had a Double cab with the 4.7. I was running 33" AT tires. I once did a 7k mile trip, all highway and the best I EVER got was 15.7 mpg. Unless you go to a crew max, the interior room isnt much bigger. I have a friend that had the 5.7 DC and his mileage was averaging around 16. Worst in class gas mileage.

I would go with the suggestions of the 4runner if you need more room. The tundra is a great truck--- if you need the power, not the room....

    my old gas hog...

Yeah. At least the interior certainly is. When I get out of the Tundra and drive the Tacoma I feel like I'm getting into a truck designed by a high school shop class.

x2 on the parking thing. Thing is freakin wide.
