If you are using stock length shock then yes you don't need longer balljoint. I have issues using stock length shock when I use OME Dakkar springs. The front has to be lifted to compliment rear and it starts to reduce Droop making the shock hit its full extension easily resulting in a horrible ride. With the longer shock you can match the ride height and still have lots of droop. The longer BJ or Uniball will allow this extra droop. Using stock length shock with Aftermarket UCAs is useless because if you lift truck with coilovers you are intruding on the very important droop which will cause the wheels to easily leave the ground. 3 inches or more droop is ideal..if wheel suddenly arrives upon a hole it must have droop to "fall" in the hole without fully extending the shock before the bottom of hole is reached. If it dosnt have enough droop due to high ride height the wheel is off the ground and the truck falls into the hole instead of just the wheel...this results in a horrible ride and a thump sound as the shock hits it's full extension. ..Just my observations!!!!!
Measure your present fender to tire clearance then center jack the front until the tire bulge starts to go away and remeasure tire to fender clearance. If you are
Less than 3in droop ride will suffer..greater than 3 inches ride improves significantly.

In a nutshell Stock length shock..no UCA required, lift worsens ride.
Extended travel shock like Part Number: FOX880-02-418,UCA Required you can lift a bit and still have lots of droop..ride is great!!!

Thank-you Miles for the engineering info. I went out and made the measurement (from the bottom lip of the wheel to the edge of the wheel well) at 32" and then jacked the truck up to achieve maximum droop and ended up with 34" = 2" droop, leaving
3.12" of compression available based on the Nitrocharger Sport shock.

Its actually a bit surprising how little travel there is on the front compared to the back. (Rear is 10" travel, +1" over stock with AP Expo leafs & WE 2" emulsion shocks)

I am very happy with the on-road improvements over stock, and off road on forest service roads is far improved over stock. I did gamble a bit on mixing digressive valving with Walker Evans shocks on the rear, and progressive valving of the OME shocks up front. So far I've been very happy with the improvement over stock on washboard gravel roads and haven't encountered any noticeable (by my limited skills) negative impact of mixing up the two types of shock valving. In real world terms I can definitely leave other vehicles struggling to maintain control with an estimated safe speed difference of +20km/hr gain. New bumpstops up front made a world of difference too, and I'd probably recommend just that mod alone provided great bang (or lack thereof) for the buck over stock.

OME shocks are fine but they have their disadvantages..fine tuning lift is a pain as they don't have adjustable rings which you can just wind up or down. They dont have remote reservoirs for long rough fast drives..heating up and shock fade and they don't have the travel of the Fox Shockgiving more droop. 2inch Droop is very little..you will be amazed with the ride if you get 3 or more in droop...longer shock with UCA. If you are a slow take your time off road driver your setup will be just fine.

For stock Lower arms this is the best setup for long travel IFS. Also most reliable as no Uniballs to wear out. The high speed off road ride is amazing.

Truck as it sits now with 3in Droop and 700lb coils. Changing to 600lb coils and lowering to 4 in droop.

WOW great work Miles. Definitely a great read.

Do you plan to drive from Florida to South America? Or transport the truck there for the expedition?

Fox Shox Factory Series Rear Shock w/Remote Reservoir 0-1'' Lift for 2003-2011 Toyota 4Runner/FJ Cruiser 4wd/2wd
I use this shock because I use the Dakkar springs which is a thicker leaf pack. This puts the axle housing a few inches lower. The FJ shock is longer so it gives more articulation compared to the shorter Tacoma rear Fox. You need to change and trim the lower bushing..also get a shock boot to protect the shaft.
When empty and you hit a big hole with Rear Timbrens there is a slight rebound but this truck will be loaded up in the rear and it helps alot with hitting huge holes.

Omg you went through a car wash with a snorkel? I've seen pictures of trucks that have had snorkels ripped off in car washes.
