this. There is nothing wrong with leafs if you get the right ones. Leafs can produce good flex.

Yeah but you are an S/C'd 1st gen on 35's, I am a non boosted 2nd gen on skinny 33's. I shouldn't break them very often if at all.

That green pre-taco that was at the meet with us Ben is running leafs up front and pretty sure he could keep up with me if not stay ahead of me and I am locked front and rear and geared and everything. haha

I think it is just a matter of getting the right leafs and coils for your rig. We all run leafs on our rear end don't we. haha

Oh and honestly I think IFS would technically be better than an SFA in all situations because a good IFS system can flex really good. The biggest problem with IFS and crawling is that no one has been able to build a strong enough IFS system that won't break shit when the going gets tough.

A few years ago, some "famous" guy (I don't recall his name, haha) custom built this absolutely monstrous IFS system for a rock crawling competition. The CV axles were huge!! and it was supposed to be the day and age that IFS was going to finally overtake SFA in the extreme crawling scene. Well sure enough he pretty much destroyed the IFS the first day and couldn't finish the run and nobody has given IFS a second thought. Even throwing shit tons of money at it, it just isn't as strong as a simple SFA.

Yes, but have any of us ever had our leafs hold us up from crawling? haha

They aren't that incapable and they are a lot cheaper than linking.

You are going to want beefier everything on pretty much any rig you pick nowadays, unless it is an LC (not even sure if the US LC's fall into this category). A dana 44 isn't much if any stronger than a Toyota 8" so that isn't exactly an upgrade. Plus who really needs a 400 hp monster in their crawler? That is just asking to break shit and get wreckless! Just get a crawlbox in there and a 22re will get you by.

As far as flex goes, you have seen Silas's recent project. Sure it isn't the kind of flex a linked rig can produce but it is still a shit ton of flex. Sure a leafed front end probably can't match that due to lack of space from the motor, but it can still do pretty good.

I think the biggest think that hurts Tacomas from being crawling rigs is that is it pretty hard to cut them up enough and fit big enough tires on them, so that when you drive or back into a wall the tires are the first thing to hit. Plus to get that far you would have to completely remove the bedsides and front fenders and without front fenders trucks look pretty ugly. haha

Did you check Barger lkq here in Boise for axles? I work in a shop here in Boise and talk to them all the time... I could ask around for you and see if I could find some for cheaper if you would like.

I don't have any funds to SAS for a few years... Besides depending on how things go I may just LT at the 1st opportunity I get, then SAS like a decade down the road or so.

Well off to a SIK meeting.
