It will mainly be my DD to and from school if I get the motorcycle. If not, the truck (not so fuel-friendly) will remain DD

Get a bike! Money well spent. It'll be more fuel efficient than the Taco and if you're in a bind and need cash to pay the bills, you can easily sell the bike.

I've been riding/racing dirt bikes since I was 7. I took the course when I was 18 and learned nothing?

    I did both...

    uploadfromtaptalk1354869849610.jpg

But I bought the bike before I ever had any desire to mod the truck. Then the bike was paid and I joined TW... wallet is empty again :banghead:

But on a serious note, depending on the bike you get, it may pay for itself. I have on 05' Yamaha R6 that I get about 45-50 mpg on even if I ride it hard. I used it to commute to work when it was 100 miles round trip. The bike practically paid for itself in gas savings. I bought it used for $4500 and my payment was $120/month plus $25 for insurance. I saved at least $150 in gas in my truck. So in reality the bike was free. I also put 10,000 less miles on my truck so far which keeps the value up and now I just ended up making money in the long run if you think about it.

Here is my problem now... money isn't as tight as it used to be. So now when it gets down below 60° at night, sometimes in the 30's with dense fog, or if its just too dam hot outside like over 90°, I'll just say screw the bike ans drive cuz its more comfortable. In summer I get AC and in winter I don't freezy balls off anymore. Now I hardly ride anymore and it kind defeats the purpose. I've been considering selling it, but just can't seem to find enough reason to sell something that's paid off.

Now I'm thinking maybe sell it and but a boat or quad or a beater car. I was in an accident on my bike and have had 2 surgeries this year because of it. I've been out of work on disability for almost a year and I'm only 25 years old. And I never stunted or rode crazy ether. I was probably the safest rider you'll meet. But accidents happen. I'm not afraid to ride, and still do occasional, but ever since the accident its just been way more scary. I'd rather pay to drive and wait in traffic than get myself killed because of stupid drivers who don't pay attention.

Its a tough decision. But as mentioned above, take the rider safety course, even if you have ridden for years. It helps a lot even for the most experienced riders.

What kind of bike do you want? Is it for fuel efficiency, or pleasure? Going to be a DD, or just a weekend cruiser? Are you buying new or used? How far is your commute to work and/or school? All these things will help us better help you. :)

X2! If you get a bike, 100% take the safety course. It'll save your life! What you'll learn is common sense but you can't learn through common sence. Meaning , the course will help you avoid accidents by recognizing potential situations and avoiding it or escaping it if need be....sorry, you'll learn what I mean in the course.

I agree that most people should take a motorcycle safety course, but for me, I didn't learn about bike control or anything like that. The only thing I learned is that if a motorcycle is sitting at an empty intersection with a red light for more than 30 seconds they can legally go through the red light. I think a lot of riding a bike on the street is common sense, which most people don't have. But that's just me. (I'm in no way saying you don't have common sense, I'm just saying people in general)

Racing/riding dirtbikes is completely different then riding bikes on the road. People are dumb and they dont care about peope on bikes. Saying you didnt learn nothing is very unlikely. Congrats man, you look cool on TW because you said you didnt learn anything. You must be the greatest rider ever??

As for bike control and field practice, no, I did not learn anything. I'm not trying to 'look cool', I'm just saying I didn't learn anything on the bike. I really couldn't care less what people think of me and my riding abilities. Am I the greatest rider ever? Hell no, and I'll never claim to be. I'm sure there's people here on TW that are better riders than me.

tough choice, being older and not liking getting clobbered anymore I say stay in "a cage", let someone else fight traffic on a scooter while you sit in the cab of your truck!
I still have a weak spot for off-road dirt bikes and very little matches the fun of a nice trail ride in the desert or mountains with friends (or by yourself if you dial it back a bit). But on the street in a big city on a motorcycle, no thank you, just too many people going too fast and not paying attention. What happens to be a fender-bender in your car will be months of recovery (or worse!) if you were on a bike when that texting person clobbers you.

    Regards,
    DD

    I agree

I had dirt bikes when I was young, and street bikes up until a few years ago (Harleys). But I'm done. For me the Risk-Reward equation was greatly tilted as more and more people drive with their head on their lap. (texting)

I'm an avid track-day junkie and love motorcycles.

That being said, I'm hard pressed to recommend a bike, especially for commuting because there are a lot of hidden costs people don't take into account. In fact, I've nearly stopped street riding because there are just too many uncontrollable risks!

Maintenance costs are considerably higher. 3k oil changes, 15k tune-ups with valve adjustments, tires only last 6-10k and quality tires are $200 a set minimum with 100+ mount and balance

Then there is the cost of gear. Helmet, jacket, gloves, boots, over pants. Commuting? better look at at least a tank or tail bag. It adds up fast!

Bike. Chicks dig bikes. ;-) Money saved on gas, squirel it away in a can somewhere and use it to mod the truck, or buy another bike.

    I vote mods.
