Google is your friend. Samsung has a class action lawsuit against them because of the issue.

Heat was the reason mine failed. The caps are too small for the heat produced. I took the board out, and 4 outta the 5 main caps had split and were leaking. I re-soldered new caps in and it works fine now, but Samsung would have nothing to do with it. Mine failed at 4 years, started clicking and powering off and on by itself until total failure.

This, along with the Vieras. The Pioneer is badass, but is pricey

It's been around for sometime. My first experience with it was a 2005 model JVC car radio. It had a simple 256x64 pixel 8-bit display. I've since had a couple cell phones with it. I guess up until recently, it's been difficult to manufacture large, TV size displays, that would have a life span that could match plasma and LCD technology. From what I've heard for pricing on these new TVs, I might have to wait a couple years to get one.

Look, I think they are built quite well. I think the true thing which sets XYZ TV to ZYX TV is actually how they were handled during the shipping process after they were built. TV's don't like to be disturbed. One that took a lot of spills is bound to shit out early.

I have had a samsung 40" in my room for over 5 years now. And the thing has been fantastic since the day I bought it. I can more then say I got my money's worth out of it at this point.

AMOLED is nice, but won't last as long as LCD or plasma. Sony's Crystal led displays are better, IMO. I'll def be getting one when they finally come out in the next few years.

I have a 4 year old 50" Samsung slim DLP, but processor crapped out a few months ago and the picture is distorted. Fail.

DLP's are excellent for their price point, but you need a UPS (battery backup for it). If your house suffers from frequent power flickers (even once a week or every two weeks) when the TV is on, it will prematurely wear out the lamp and you'll find yourself replacing it every 12-24 months.

    What changed?

I'm still running the 56" Sony 4:3 rear-screen projection that my boss gave me in 2005 when he got a new Plasma.
I don't know how long he had it, but it has 5 inputs, 2 of them are component, but only one supports 1080i, the others only do 480, and it doesn't support 720.

It just may be my type of DLP. The light lamp requires a certain cool down period. When the TV is turned off the lamp light goes out in stages. If the power flickers and causes a hard shutdown, the lamp prematurely wears over time. It's one reason I have an APC UPS.

    Ahh... HID projector.
I don't know if my Sony has HID lamps or not.

Andrew, some observations about the longevity of electronics. Heat and bad power will kill electronics faster than anything. Some users stuff their electronics in cabinets or place is direct sunlight without any ventilation and wonder why they have so many problems. Unhealthy power, e.g., over voltage, under voltage, spikes and surges, take their toll. Some electronics manufacturers use designs and substandard components to reduce their costs to become more competitive. A good resent example of this are laptop batteries and electrolytic capacitors. As with vehicles, some electronics manufacturers are noted for better quality (conformance to specification) than others, but they tend to cost more and provide better warranty service. The cost of extended warranty (prepaid maintenance) could also be an indicator of what risk the manufacturer expects. Finally, Consumer Report publishes the results of their readers reliability experiences with various flat panel TV manufacturers on page 128 of their 2013 Buying Guide.

LED tv's have like 50,000 hours of life compared to about 30,000 for LCD. Plasma tv's are energy hogs and old technology. A decent LED will put one in it's place. The trash.

Andrew, there is a great deal of information on flat panel television information on http://reviews.cnet.com/televisions/. I found that the amount of light in the room will have a major affect on matte vs. glossy screens which will dictate a LED LCD or Plasma in the same price range. I tested a matte LED LCD and a glossy Plasma in a bright room. In the 60" $1000 range, we decided to sacrifice the Plasma picture quality for less reflections on the LED LCD. If the room was dark during the day, I would have kept the Plasma in a heartbeat. The annual projected energy cost in the new generation LED LCD and Plasma flat panels based on our usage was negligible.

I agree with Ryan that in the same price range, the newer LED LCDs are better CCFL LCDs, especially in a bright room. Only time will tell if it was worth standing in line for three hours at Walmart on Thanksgiving for a $688 Vizio 601i-A3.

i've got an aquos, circa 2003/2004, model LC37HV4U... it is really a great tv, ...has an outstanding picture, excellent dark/black reproduction, sharpness, etc. (had one of the better video processors at the time), ..and was the slimmest LCD panel at the time (I/O and power housed in a remote a/v unit)... :)

i have some LCD panels /w CCFL backlights rated at 60,000 hours... the CCFL backlights tend to produce better dark colors than many of the LED backlit panels, ...especially the "edge-lit" LED backlit panels...

"LED" is kinda a "fad" right now, ...and it's misleading in the sense that they the images are formed via "LCD", ...the "LED" refers to a backlight... now the LED-backlit panels seem to be coming in at slimmer profiles, ..but the next major improvement will probably be OLED, which will be a further dramatic reduction in form factor...
