It depends on what you like in a camera and what type of camera you want. I really like my dslr, but it's big so it's not ideal for backpacking and rock climbing so I also have a cheaper and smaller point and shoot camera. For point and shoot cameras, I like a good macro and little to no delay between when you push the shutter button and when it actually takes the picture. There are a lot of different cameras out there, so it really depends on what you like.
Even if you don't plan on buying from them, you can go to a store (Best Buy, Fry's, etc.) and try their cameras out. They'll usually display all of the cameras that they carry and you can practice taking pictures and using the different settings just to get a feel for what you like.

For ordinary people taking pictures, a short shutter delay is one of the biggest factors in successful pictures. "How come everyone's looking away and walking out of the picture???"

A lot will depend on your price range. How much are you looking to spend? Also, does she know anything about cameras or are you looking at more of a "point and shoot" setup?

Let's assume Mikey is rich, and his wife is a member of sports shooter working for the Associated Press, and she's trying to up her game past Annie.

In this case, I would suggest a PhaseOne IQ180 on a Mamiya body.

    This is much more fun.

yeah not rich, and the most experience we have with cameras is the ones on our phones... lol I think I'm thinking under $300 and I think she is thinking under $500. She had mentioned a Panasonic Lumix or something I think. I'll take a look at brian's and maybe get a better feel for what I'm looking for cause I'm a blank slate right now.

I guess the question is "it depends". You have dslr and point and shoot. This year, there are a whole slew of "mirrorless" cameras like the Nikon V1 also available. Any of them will make a nice picture.

If your wife just wants to take nice pictures and not worry too much about "how", then a good point and shoot or even a mirror-less would be the way to go. If she's looking to make photography a hobby, a dSLR might be the better choice.

dSLR and mirror-less cameras have the benefit of interchangeable lenses which allow you to change between a variety of focal lengths. Point and shoot cameras come in a variety of styles from the simple to almost the same quality images as a dSLR but without the size or interchangeable lenses.

If you have an idea what she is interested in, it will be easier to point you in the right direction.
