Ya, getting a guy who normally performs in front of teenage girls to perform in front of football fans probably wasn't such a good idea.

True, especially in countries that US troops are stationed in. A lot of people view us as occupiers. I know I wouldn't like it too much if there was a base of Mexican or Russian troops stationed right down the road from my house.

No the US is in there for the US's sake. Trust me if we left it up to the South Koreans we would be out of there. South Korea is something like 25 times wealthier than the North. They would be able to far out last the North if they ever invaded. I was listening to an interview with a quite famous investor who lives in China named Jim Rogers, and it is his belief that the North and South will be reunified in the next 5 years. He said he had recently gone on a trip to North Korea and everyone was talking about reunifying with the South. He said that biggest opponent to this is actually the Japanese, because they know economically they would have a hard time competing with a unified Korea. Now I don't know if they are going to reunify, but the world is definitely changing. Oh the Japanese want us out of their country too, but we basically told them to screw off.

I can't see them unifying. That would be too much for S. Korea. All of the sudden they have to support everyone in the N. Divert funds to rebuild and bring it up to modern standards. No way.

LOL, yeah music is just a matter of opinion for the most part. That and immaturity. When I was in middle school I thought Bone Thugs n Harmony were the shit. But yeah I think EJ has some good tunes. The Beatles on the other hand, never understood what was so great about them.

You have to remember Korea has quite a complicated history, and their peninsula sat at the conflux of the Chinese, Japanese, and Russian empires. Then in the early 1900s Japan annexed the entire peninsula (similar to France annexing Algeria, or even the German quest for Lebensraum) and it was only from the ashes of WWII that a modern Korea (North and South) was allowed to form. The last 100 years of Korean history consists of war, occupation, annexation, war, and then occupation.

Military generals, prior to the outbreak of the Korean War, did not want direct US intervention anywhere on the mainland as they feared getting bogged down fighting the "endless yellow hordes". Truman was a very frugal man and had a deep contempt for professional military men, and did not think the military could manage its own affairs without enormous waste. After WWII Truman set about to stop the growth of communism but also cut the military down to a fraction of what it was in 1945 (he did not see cutting the military connected in any way to stopping communism, he viewed these as separate events).

When the North Koreans invaded in 1950, they rode on Soviet T-34/85 tanks (better variant of the tank that crushed the Wehrmacht), and there was nothing to stop them, and anti-tank weapons were in critical short supply. A few days after the invasion, General MacArthur flew to Korea to assess the situation himself. His assessment was damning- the South Koreans were incapable of fighting (he noted he didn't see a single wounded man), and the only thing that could save the South was direct intervention of US fighting men. Our relationship with South Korea has always been uneven (although given the background highly justified) and at most times a thankless endeavor.

What started out as "police action" has turned into the endless stationing of US troops, and we are coming up on 60 years since the cease fire. Carter tried to pull out of Korea, but Congress stopped that dead in its tracks. Unless we see some real change in defense spending and policy, we won't be leaving anytime soon. It is also believed that North Korea has enough heavy artillery and rockets to destroy Seoul in about an hour. The government of South Korea knows this, and they view it as a fair trade-off to keep unpopular troops stationed in their country.

This too shall pass. When the Soviets shot down Korean Air flight 007 over restricted airspace, killing all on board, you would have thought Russians could never go to Korea. That has since passed. Whenever Japan and Korea fight about their maritime border, the Japanese become the bad guys and they catch all the anger and public wrath. When China gets involved in fishing disputes, the Chinese become the bad guys. The actions of the rapper at a time when frustration with US policy was at an all time high, although reprehensible, amounts to nothing more than an irrelevant outburst of populist sentiment.

The point about reunification is interesting, but even though the leaders say they dream of reunification no one wants it. They all look at the German model. West Germans had to pay for half a century of communist mismanagement, and provide pensions to people who didn't pay into the system. That isn't cheap! That scares the hell out of the South. When Cyprus had a referendum on reunification, the south side (wealthy side) rejected it outright. China doesn't want South Korea as a neighbor either, it is too close to Beijing. If anything they might settle for a loose confederation and recognition of some mutually agreeable land rights, but I think the two Koreas will forever go down their divergent paths.

It was indeed a multinational force, but the US pushed it through the UN and contributed 90% of the forces. Not trying to belittle the other nations involved, but for practical matters it was a US war. It is interesting when you read about the nations that sent troops, the most interesting being Ethiopia.

Many nations fought with the US in the Vietnam war, and no one tries to raise that slight distinction...the first tunnel rats were from New Zealand.

actually...in most cases it is. if you define success as a commercial one of fame & fortune.
You'd love foreign troops stationed down the street from you if you lived in a country who was under constant threat and had little or no defense system of your own.

btw...there is a pretty good station of troops down the street from you right now. they play an important role in our country's defense...and I'm glad for it. :oldglory:
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is probably one of them...and I'd concur.

Mad Man Acrosss the Water would be another excellent choice...2 of his best, IMO
yes, but the the US did most of the heavy lifting. My dad has the scars to prove it. :(
