So I had a 2009 silver stream mica that I painted the stock sport wheels anthracite and it looked great. Even when I traded it in the salesman asked if they were a special order and couldn't believe how well the rattle can job held up over 2 years. Well now I have a 2012 MGM and I'm debating between black or anthracite on the stockers this time.

Any MGM owners got pics of 17" sports painted anthracite/gun metal?

Well, I'll be doing this in a couple weeks and post some pics. Got the FJ anthracite TRD center caps in a couple days ago, now just gotta paint the wheels.

    Finally painted the wheels.

As far as prep and painting, here are the steps I took.
    - removed weights from front lip
    - washed with soapy water and scrubbed with green brilo pad
    - dried with towel
    - wiped with tack cloth
    - sanded with 600 grit
    - rinsed thoroughly with water
    - Dried with towel
    - wiped with tack cloth again
    - taped off valve stems by wrapping tape around stem
    - used index card method between wheel and tire
    - primed with self etching primer
    - dried/heat cured with a heat gun
    - lightly sanded any necessary areas that were not to my liking
    - wiped sanded areas with tack cloth
    - painted with duplicolor "graphite" wheel paint
    - heat cured again
    - took and had them balanced with sticky weights
    - admired hard work

I tend to over prep, but I have found it better to over prep than to under prep. I have found myself overusing the tack cloth, but I would rather overuse it than have dust and hair particles on the wheel and paint over them.

Just an FYI for those wondering, yes I painted my calipers red, and my rear OME shocks red. I hated the yellow color the OME shocks were. So, I sanded them down, primed them with universal primer and sprayed them with red VHT spray on caliper paint. Actually, I painted one rear with primer and paint, and the other with red Plastidip, as a test to see which I liked better and which holds up. I will be removing the plastidip from the one rear and painting it with primer and VHT caliper paint. As it looks sharper. The calipers I actually painted with the brush on style caliper paint since its easier to work with on the calipers.

Most definitely! It looks so horrible and goofy right now. But since the company I work for gives me a company car (2013 Avalon Limited, fully loaded) with gas paid for and unlimited personal use :) I barely drive the truck. I bought the truck on May 5th and it only has about 12K on it right now. Just to put things in perspective within 7 months of buying my old 09 brand new, it had 20k-25K on it. I just can't justify spending $$$$ on AT tires, until I wear out the ones it came with. I plan on getting 285/70/17's

Looks great! I may swagger jack you and do this to mine. I have an 13 MGM DCSB. Very good idea to use the FJ Anthracite center caps! How much did those cost you if you don't mind my asking?

How long did you let them dry after you heat cured them before you put them back on the taco?

That looks awesome! I've been wanting to do my sport wheels with the same paint, and this sealed the deal for me. Now when I get a chance to do it will be another story, I'll get pics though

About $8-11 per center cap, depending on where you buy them. Dealership wanted $18, I told them TRDParts4U.com had them for $10/ea and parts guy matched the price.

    Overnight. So approximately 12 hours.

I noticed you have OME springs but they are red....how'd you go about making that happen?

Nice job, looks good! Did you clear coat them too? I'm in the process of doing this myself. I bought 17" FJ alloys on craigslist (5 wheels and tires for $325). The spare is gouged up pretty bad so I'm practicing on it. If it turns out good, I'll do the others. If not, I'll probably get them powder coated.

Rattle canned and baked them in the oven for a couple of hours. No chips or flakes.

Make the coat extra thick. After baking them let them just chill in the oven for over night

Nice job on the wheels! Definitely gave me an idea.

Do you happen to remember what the part number was on the center caps you used?
