4x4 is over rated

Took my 06 TRD-Off Road PreRunner offroading this past weekend in the ocala national forest in Florida it had been raining heavy that morning so every thing was real muddy and nasty. the truck is completely stock with BFG Rugged Trail tires took it though some pretty deep ruts that were full of water but with that rear end locked in truck never even thought about geting stuck and when i came out im pretty sure the front wheels left the ground

I was kinda worried at first with it being 2wheel drive but it did really good on the trails in wet sand/light mud that locking rear end helps a lot i think but heres a few pics of the after math when i got home.

oh yeah monday i added a westin bullbar i gotta get some pics of that soon too

 

It might be better to say the 2WD is UNDER RATED.

Thats awesome, i need to do the grey wire mod so i can use the locker outside of 4lo.

 

when i first got the truck i thought you could only use the locker below 5mph or it would screw up the rear end hope not cause i had it locked and was doing about 20 though that soft sutff

 

Yeah, agree with the statement the 2wd is underrated, especially if it has a locker.

Plus, I keep hearing the stock tires are crap offroad.

i have a 4x4, and my philosophy is that 2 wheel drive makes it fun and (unless you are in a situation that you are obviously gonna get stuck) my goal is to use 4 wheel as little as possible. you kick it into 4 wheel drive only when you/someone else gets stuck.

 

What trails did you hit out there? Do you have any pics of the trail? I want to head out there during Spring Break or Summer, have some fun.

Never underestimate the locked 4x2!

 

Surely - why not? With some extra throttle, a few spare axle shafts & parts, a winch, and some patient people to ruin their wheeling day while they wait for you to fix/pull you outta a mess while the rest of the group moves on....

Hah you won't like that 2wd in the Florida sugar sand by me. That is the reason I traded my prerunner for a 4wd. Well that and I wanted a TRD sport. BTW rock on with that JRR sticker, thats the only station I listen to.

yeh i must say i am very happy with my 2wd i dont get in the mud much but one weekend i was hanging out with a buddy and he has a jeep hes a 4x4 fanatic he took me down the street from his house in bfe where there was a trail i never got stuck i even got side ways in a ditch full of water and did not get stuck he was pretty impressed just seemed like there was to much power to get stuck and i dont have the locking rear diff just lsd which helped

 

I was taught how to drive on the beach in a 2wd Sequoia.

 

Yea the beach is a little more packed down than what I go through. It is fine in 4wd but almost impossible in 2wd. I have made it a few times in 2wd and I have been driving on beaches for over 10 years with 2wd.

 

2WD sucks, period. I've been driving 4X4's for 30 years now. Once I took a chance on a Prerunner and kept it only a few months. Most of the time you can proceed with 2WD if going forward using momentum. Try backing that sucker up with the ass end up hill and you are screwed. "Four Wheel Drive, There Is No Substitute".

 

In Florida, a speed bump qualifies as a hill.

That's exactly what I do! Sometimes I run 2wd locked, but either way I'm usually in 2wd so I can make the tight turns. That also leaves 4wd as option to get unstuck without requiring a winch or help from a friend. So much easier and faster to twist the knob and start going again than to stop, flag down a friend, get out in the mud, drag a winch line, hook up the snatch block(s), get back in, and THEN finally get out.

Then again I've also needed 4wd to get out of my driveway so 4wd is NOT over rated.
