A 4.6L V8 would not be any worse on gas than the V6. It would come with the 6spd tranny and not have to work nearly as hard. I don't think selling 5% of all Tacomas with the V8 would hurt CAFE standards with all the Prius and other hybrids we have. It has been proven time and time again that a bigger engine that doesn't need to work as hard saves gas. The Prius switched to a bigger engine and got better gas mileage, the 5.7 tundra got better than the 4.7, I could go on and on. However, I don't see Toyota ever dropping in a V8. You can't even get the V6 in a regular cab or a access cab with the 2wd suspension.

My 04, SR5 Access Cab, 2WD Tundra w/ 4.7 V8 was very consistent with MPG and averaged 18.7 mpg over the 5 years I owned the truck and on occasion could hit 21mpg on the H/W. I honestly feel in a much lighter Tacoma, the 4.7 V8 could average 20 mpg and reach 23mpg on the H/W.

I'd love a V-8 in a Tacoma...preferrably a modern one with 400 hp / 375 lb-ft with a manual trans that gets better mileage than the current V-6. I know they could build it but there might not be enough of a market. Realistically, a modern 4.0 V-6 should have 320 hp / 285 lb-ft and get 17 city / 24 hwy mpg with either auto or manual. The Tacoma is the best small pickup available in North America...but it could be so much better.

    Probably because 270 hp / 278 ft-lb is better than 236 hp / 266 ft-lb.

That's why I moved to 4.6L Tundra averages about 17MPG just about same as my Tacoma but now with 310 Hp and beefier Truck, just love it...made a trip to Newfoundland this summer with hauling 19 ft TT bet Tacoma would struggle on those hills.

Getting 30 mpg on the highway
My 4.0 does everything I ever need it to, as did my 3.0 and my 3.6. I don't tow anything bigger than a dirtbike. Why go bigger unless that's my only option?

The height elevation explains the great fuel mileage out of the v8. bring that same v8 down to sea level and then try getting 20+ MPG. The reason you are getting good fuel econ is not because of some special gas. Its the lean mixture the computer for the rig has created.

    Yeah.
Yeah, my wife's V8 4Runner gets between 16 and 17 (mostly town driving) at 800ft elevation.

Sure is some smooth power, although I wouldn't consider it way more powerful that my Taco. It's just different.

Different drive due to the basic overall design has changed (truck vs. SUV, aerodynamics, center of gravity, etc etc.)

    Yeah.
Not really what I meant. I meant that the V-8 just feels smoother at pretty much every RPM, not the ride.

Added weight, added cost, added cooling and lack of room to work on it......
I would say it would be a no go...

That was the reason I got a Taco, I wanted a smaller lighter better on fuel.....
Change that I would go back to full size.

Had the V8 4runner and would def get the V8. The 4.7l is FAST. Go and race one, you'll see.
