Wanting to get my Dad a nice pair of sunglasses for Xmas. Probably Ray-Bans. Not sure if I should get him polarized or non-polarized?

His eyes aren't as good as they used to be, but he can still see fine. He will probably use the sunglasses mostly for driving.

What say you? Should I get him polarized or not?

    Thanks!

Polarized is the way to go. I always thought people were dumb for buying expensive glasses until I got my first pair.. Totally worth it.

Costa Del Mar polarized 580 glass, any style. Best sunglasses for driving and water sports, fishing. etc. I've had many brands through the years and these are the best IMO.

I prefer the Rayban G-15 neutral gray-green lens. Drove with these for years. Developed for USAF pilots. Good enough for me.

I have polarized lenses now, and they can cause visibillity issues with tinting and other electronics displays, especially LCD gauges.

    Going back to G-15 soon.

There shouldn't be an option polarized is always the way to go! I wear mine all the time even in the rain/ snow/ fog/ they cut down on the glare so much. Besides here in the PNW you never know what the weather will be from one pass to the next.

    Good stuff guys.

So, is the only downside to wearing polarized glasses is when looking at other polarized things such as radio displays? Any issues with depth perception looking down the road?

I don't have issues with anything at all. My display may not be polarized tho, but no depth perception issues.

    Not in my experience.

For bike riders, I've read in can affect your ability to spot glare off oil slicks and puddles, causing possible safety issues.

Yeah, polarized can cause problems with displays. Just depends on if the display polarization is aligned with the glasses.

I have a GPS screen that shows up totally black with polarized glasses. If I tilt my head sideways it is visible.

So- if he drives with a GPS you may want to be careful about polarized becuase he may hate that.

What does he drive & what other times will he use them? I have both polarized and nonpolarized. I have found polarized lenses sometimes make things invisible.

SERENGETI are my choice when driving (or flying).

The main thing ive noticed with my polarized lenses is that sometimes looking at other vehicles glass or something it gets all psychedelic colors. not really an issue for me.

Would never buy a pair of glasses if they werent polarized. If the lenses arent too dark polarized lenses help you see in the rain as well while driving.

He drives a 1st gen taco:D. At work, he drives a Chevy 2500. I think the only time he will use them is driving at work, maybe during a hike as well, and a little bit of fishing.

Big tires, big lift, Lots of stuff's.
Non is what I wear. Mainly because its against my work policy to wear polarized because of the glass face on our gauges is normally polarized so its hard to see. My buddy is a pilot and told me they can only wear glass lenses non polarized glasses. It's all personal preference. I have both.
