As some of you may have heard Michigan passed the Right-to-work legislation which hits the Unions right in the stomach and twists their arms behind their backs. What do you think? Are Unions still a valuable part of the U.S. culture and it's economy or do you think Unions have strayed too far from their original purpose, are too corrupt and are actually hurting the economy? I, myself, would have to go with the latter. Unions started off as noble causes to help the plight of the overworked and underpaid workers but as of late, even the unions chiefs don't care. They seem like they just line their pockets with the dues and go about their days, asking for far too much (just because they can) which many claim is why so many jobs are being exported out.

Why should I be forced to join a union to be able to work. It is fucking retarded. Join a Union if you want to, but it should never be forced upon someone.

I live in a right-to-work state and I feel that I shouldn't be forced to work for any union. If you can work, work. You shouldn't have to rely on someone (unions) to ensure your job. That would be a NAY from me.

Todays Unions are a scam. Why should one have to join the union to get work? why should non union works have to pay union dues? The unions for the most part are corrupt and will push corperations to the brink of failure. Example GM and hostess just to name 2 of them

Unions were created to protect the 12 year old children that worked in factories from getting their arms ripped off. I don't think we have that problem anymore.

I understand the concept of why Unions were created, to protect the workers. But in my small view it's become less about protecting a hardworker from a tyrant employer and more about "what are you going to give me to work"

I am not part of a union, I work hard therefor my employer keeps me. With that my employer also gives me raises, pays for my work lunches and treats me pretty well. For the most part, today's companies want to keep good workers and follow good management practices that promote good workers.

I think their place has passed and that this is a good thing.

I'm a union employee. 1 of the benefits of being a union member is better insurance for your family.I think unions have their place, but unions have to be smart about doing business with the contractor. Strong arm tactics are thing of the past.unions also offer the employees training for certain skills, that will benefit both the employees and the contractor by creating a safer and more efficient work environment.

The problem is today Corporate America is running over the worker. Look at whats happening. They are getting more out of less people and not giving out raises either, profits are soaring. The old "you don't like, there is the door" is stronger than ever with so many looking for work. The average salary is going to drop as the bean counters get control.
Having said that, if you don't want to join the union, you should not enjoy the benefits of the union powers. Thats getting something for nothing. I used to hate unions but I hate corporate greed more now.

Disclaimer: I have never been in a union, I have 30 years in the work force.

I predict this thread will be :locked:

I come from a family of union organizers around the Great Lakes shipping/industrial centers and logging camps. I've grown up hearing stories about my great grandparents (told from the perspective of my grandparents when they were young children) being run out of town at gunpoint in the middle of the night with nothing but the clothing on their backs.

The Union heyday is over, but the fact remains that many employers will happily abuse their employees if left to their own devices. If they ran their business in a fair and ethical manner and treated employees as humans should be treated, their employees would never find it necessary to unionize. It's that simple.

Right-to-work is a way to skirt union rules. If companies spent as much time, money, and effort on being decent employers as they spend on union busting I don't think they'd have to deal with a unions.

I don't think you should be forced to join a union, so if you don't want to join a union find a job in a non-union shop.
