Tacoma Headache Rack

I have a Truxedo Lo Pro soft rollup tonneau cover on my 2012 Tacoma Dbl Cab and want to install a "Backrack" (10317) headache rack. Backrack's website shows it on a Tundra, using the Tonneau Cover Adapter Kit, but says it can't be mounted on the Tacoma. Has anyone figured out a work around on how a Backrack can be mounted on the Tacoma?

 

I thought they made one to fit the Tacoma. I looked at their website (from home 2 days ago...stupid firewall won't let me access it at work) and it was listed in the table there, I think. I'm planning to go to a vendor in Anchorage, that was listed on their website, tomorrow. I'll ask about the rollup tonneau cover while I'm there. I'll let you know what I find out.

 

I have ordered and installed a Backrack from my '09, they do have a Tacoma specific headache rack (10317 TB). As for install with a tonneau; my tonneau cover (Bestop EZ roll) was not supported with the rack (knew this from the start) but I made it work with some cutting and grinding. I can post pictures if you want to see what I did. That said the Truxedo Lo Pro QT is supported (I don't know if that is different from your model) and you should have no problems with install.

Points to note:
1: the gap between the front of the rack and the bed. This allows some rain/snow in.

2: The gap between my tunneau and the rack. Again some rain/snow, likely not an issue with an approved tunneau

Current solution: leave the frozen snow/ice as an insulator (removed for pic)
Possible future solution: gun tape, and/or foam blocks

 

Thanks for the pics...now that I've seen it on the truck, I'm convinced that's what I want. Tonneau isn't an issue for me (currently)... I'm planning to get the toolbox kit with mine. I keep the bed open for ease of ATV transport.

And I haven't taken all my Xmas lights down either...probably for the same reason you haven't.

I put away all the real Christmasey stuff...left the lights on the house and fir trees (white and blue colored) because of too much snow and too darn cold. Decided they're Winter morale lights. When they turn off the giant star on the mountainside outside Anchorage...I'll consider taking down the rest. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

 

I would definitely chekc out Littledvl here on this site, he makes a really nice "Headache rack". For a nice price too.

 

I agree 100 %. I picked mone up today from Eric , and the kid has mad skills. I had tabs put on mine for two lights and two firesticks.

 

I looked him up on here...really like the looks of the one he put on his truck. I'd want one a little closer to or slightly over cab height as I want to mount a couple of "moose spotter" Light Forces up there. Last year I was talking to a fabricator on here (can't recall the name right now--think he was in 'Bama) .. problem comes down to shipping costs on something that heavy combined with me being stuck up here in the FFFN (Frozen Frigid Frickin' North). I appreciate the recommendation.

 

Rob, as for the Back Rack, I think mine was around 250-300, shipped through whatever parts dealer I ordered from. That said it is a Canadian product, so I don't know if you would get hit with customs. Another option is Pro Rack. It looks like an identical product, only Amuricun.

Cool Liam! There's actually a vendor in Anchorage for BackRack. Some of the trucks at work have them mounted. I'm gonna go to the vendor today. A lot of times the vendor has batch shipments coming in and that helps defray some shipping cost. If it doesn't pan out, I'll look at the Pro Rack. The free shipping for lower 48 doesn't always work for us here...it's almost like being in ... well heck, Canada!

I have made a few racks, not all have been like mine on my truck. This is one I did for 09DC4X4 on here:




It has 4 light tabs on the top, only issue is shipping to AK. If the back rack and pro rack dont work out shoot me a PM

Beautiful work. How is that mounted? The screw heads visible in the pics - what are they screwed into?

 

I ordered and will be installing a Spyder Industries head ache rack sometime next week. Can anyone share some advise for installing headache racks on 2nd gens with the factory bedliner?

My primary concern is how to get to the underside of the bed lip, ideally to put a steel reinforcement (to prevent bed lip cracking in the far future), or even to just get a nut and bolt put together. Does the bedliner need to come out? Can you access the 'inside' of the lip from underneath the truck?
