Tundra brake upgrade?? Just a few questions.

I will have to look at the ebay stuff when I am home. Work does not dare let us get on ebay. So no opinions on the brembo set up anyone?

 

Not sure what Brembos you are refering too but I dont think their calipers are any different than the OEM ones unless they have a six piston upgrad. I would stick with some used calipers off of ebay and some decent rotors.

 

Instead of doing the Tundra upgrade just going with a better rotor and pad until I really need the greater stopping power. No doubt I want the Tundra brakes it is just a matter of $$ & time. I have a wheeling trip on the 28th and kinda need everything done by then.

 

I'm running Brembo blank rotors and Raybestos remanufactored calipers with Hawk LTS pads. Like it so far. No shakes, no vibrations, no pulsing pedal. Keep in mind I've only had this for a week and a half or so and less than 500 miles so take this with a grain of salt.

I'm a huge fan of Hawk LTS pads though... ran them on my last Tacoma (stock braking system) with great success.

 

So you have the brake upgrade using the Brembo rotors and hawk pads? I was thinkg of doing the same but just using the stock braking system or going with the Tundra upgrade.

 

Oh I see... yeah, I have the Tundra caliper swap with Brembos and Hawk pads.

On my old Tacoma (2000 4x4 TRD), all I did was Powerslot slotted rotors and Hawk LTS pads and was pretty happy over the stock OEM stuff. Granted, I was running all stock, 31s, no lift and no real extra weight to speak of.

 

Yea see that is where I do not want to run into issues with the stock replacement stuff. I have now been reading about the Brembo rotors and everyone seems to be happy with them as a stock replacment. I may just try out the Powerslot slotted rotors as well and see how that goes. Who knows I may end up doing this upgrade if I can get all the parts soon and for good prices. I will keep looking that's for sure.

 

Dont do it. You'll just waist money in a long run. If you want the big brakes, gather up some disapline and save up your money. I did mine for less than $400 with new brake lines. You dont need the new brake lines so that's like $70 saved.

Well with this info looks like I will do the upgrade. Have you had any MC problems? LIke mentioned earlier with the fluid level being low? I will get new lines just because I do not want to drill. Are these the bigger caliper? I can not see them off of ebay at work. Also I think I will just get new shoes for the rear.

 

i would also look up rock auto and get parts. they have tundra calipers for 50 bucks.

 

What are "MC problems"? Fluid level will only get low as the pads wear low so no problems there yet for me.

They are off a 2003 so there is a slight possibility they are not the big calipers but Im pretty much %99 sure they are. Always ask to see a pic of the product bf you buy. Here is how you tell the difference:

Made in China knock offs . Great site for cheap replacements but Ive been less than excited with the products Ive recieved from them so far. I would feel safer with used OEM than new crap but thats just me.

 

I think that the 05 and up are the big calipers. Not a big deal if these ones off of the 03 are not as they will work also.

 

i have all oem equipment that i had on my 3rd gen. Just sitting in my garage they only have about 200 miles on them

 

What year did it all come off of? We can work something out if you are looking to get it out of there.

I could or I could get used parts and spend 1/2 as much. It's not something I really need. I just want it.

 

For the low fluid level? Just as mentioned, keep an eye on things. The larger pistons require more fluid as the pads wear, so just keeping an eye on the fluid level would be your best bet. Unless you get cheap pads they should last you quite a while. Good luck and take pics of course!

 

x2! it's not really a concern or a reason not to do the swap, just realize that you'll have to pay more attention to the level as time goes on... but that's 1000s of miles down the road before it even comes into play.

Most of the older calipers were removed from the market with the TSB. They are very rare but you can ask the seller for a picture to make sure. I wouldnt take the smaller calipers as they tended to warp the rotors (hence the new calipers with bigger surface area).
