Sorry Oz, this is what I get texting, talking & trying to reply...

So, I think some folks would be okay with a law (speed limit) but, maybe not so cool with having a device that may tell on them (black box). So I think some will view them as completely different things.

I got to agree with Oz on this.

Unless/until they start using this data to penalize people who haven't caused an accident, I think it is a good thing.

If I cause an accident, I should be held responsible. I would want someone else that causes an accident and damages my person or property held responsible as well.

It isn't about your rights or freedom at this point.

Reminds me of when I had a Chevy and people wanted to always know how to rip out all the OnStar equipment because they thought they were so important that someone was tracking their every move.

If it will make accident investigations easier and curb possible insurance fraud, I'm fine with it. If you drive stupid, it's eventually going to catch up to you black box or not one day anyway. No ones going to track you to the strip club and fine you because the black box sent out information that showed you exceeded the speed limit by 7 during your trip.

And yet allegedly the data wouldn't be used unless an offense had already been committed therefore in fact not making it any safer at all...

You're a funny guy? A person being held responsible and having to live with the results of their own actions in this country....

No sarcasm bro...I have some reading I would like to recommend to you. I'd love to see you start with one of the cats quoted in my sig...

Cause it's 'Merica where we constantly claim our freedoms are being taken away even though nothing has actually changed. I don't know how you Canadians live free of constant paranoia. It's just not normal.

maybe $5, all of that information is needed for ABS, traction, stability, etc, they just store a small sample to non volatile memory.

Even though I've yet to form an opinion, I think some of the reasons certain peeps will be concerned are those listed in items #22 & #35 of this thread.

That is done so the system knows whether or not to arm the passenger airbag.

Put a 40lb box in your passenger seat... the seatbelt warning will come on, but the passenger airbag will not arm.

As soon as they come out?

They've been out for the better part of 15 years.
Often under the passenger seat, but not always.
They aren't even talking about that. The ACLU is raising concerns that the technology COULD be used to do that... but it couldn't even be used for that without GPS technology (which is not in all vehicles).
It's not illegal to go 80mph on many highways.
It's not illegal to go 200 on a track.
The recorder has no way of indicating WHERE the speeding took place.

At the present time, a warrant, or consent, is needed for any government agency to download the recorded data, and that will ALWAYS be the case... the ACLU and other rights organizations will fight to keep that.

Also, if you are worried about speeding tickets....
Infractions must be PERSONALLY witnessed by LEO.

You can walk into a police station and tell them that you went 50 in a 30 and they can't cite you unless you present a situation that rises to the level of misdemeanor or felony (that's how they peg the idiots that post their stunt riding online).
That is still up for debate.
That is the opinion of the ACLU, but others disagree.
The auto manufacturers view it as "their" data... but it is still not released to police without a warrant.
