Okay so here is a bit of explaining on how i do my wiring. There are many ways to do it. But i have found this to be the safest and easiest way to use relays and switches. I don't like doing just switches as every time i try it, things go wrong so i pretty much relay EVERYTHING haha

Now this is the traditional way to do it..

Now while this way usually works fine. I do it differently I like to run the switch on the ground part of the relay like this.

    Basicrelaywiring_4d7a455f7417227ffa5046214433958f51c67d7b.jpg

I do this because you don't have to run a power cable into the cab OR back out. The less power cable the better. Heck the less cable the better. All you have to do is have one short cable tired directly to ground right by the switch, the one cable going out to the relay.

Yes i just split off the main power cable for the relay. Not much current gets used so its safe to do that.

Not only does this make wiring easier as you don't have as many wires everywhere, you can literally add as many switches as you want to the relay. Why? because all the relay requires is ground..you can get ground..anywhere! very convenient. Just add another switch somewhere and then tie it either into the same ground wire, or into the relay terminal. Easy as that.

So thats how i do relays. This ways does get kind of complicated when dual batteries come into play. THen you have to run ground from the aux battery strait to the switch. but ill cover that later when i draw up my own trucks wiring diagram as im getting it ready for dual batteries.

Thanks man! there is a ton to read in here now..haha

and yes i am open open. Doesn't stop me tho  i find if you pick a good line you can do quite well without lockers. I will love having them though as it'll open the door for some other harder trails.

    nice!
I recently traded in my lifted/locked/(atrac) fj for a more practical DD and picked up an old 4runner for a weekend toy. open/open has been good to me so far with momentum lol. some of your pics are pretty impressive for also being open open. Keep up the good work. sub'd to this thread now :p

Oh wow, thats a pretty smart way of doing the relay! Very cool. So you basically shut off the relay by shutting off the ground?

Oh nice man! I'd love an old 1st gen 4runner to SAS for a crawler rig. But this is a money pit enough :p haha

Yea sometimes I wish I had a locker and lower gears to take some stuff a bit slower but hell..long as it gets up it :p haha

Yep. By taking off the ground the internal switch disconnects the main power in the relay. It's much nicer I think and safer. Plus..can add a lot of switches if ya want to the same relay. This is how ill have a switch on the inside for the camp lights and bed lights as well as separate switches outside in the bed so you don't have too in the truck to turn them on

Yep 4 pole relays. Get them at Orielys in the lighting section. They are 30 amp. Can get 40amp though.

not that you would need any higher. My LFs only draw 9 amps anyways. Most ill be running is the 4 hellas on one relay which will be almost 20 amps. everything else is LEDs

you can still use a 5 pole relay. YOu just won't have a wire on the naturally closed pole.
