Not to take anything away from you, but my 401k is projected to give me over 4k in todays dollars upon my retirement. Don't need a union to do that for me.

I swore I was gonna stay out of this thread.....

People that don't want to be a member of a union think that the corporations will take care of the workers...You can't fix stupid.

My Dad got the same deal with the teamsters, right at the time UPS renegosiated about eight years or so ago. Sweet deal! he is living the dream in retirement now. No bills, no mortgage and money coming in every month. I am very happy for him.

Obviously, 18 million people think otherwise.

Tampa is my home, and Tampa is hurting; hence I was forced to leave and move to an equally awesome place (Denver).

You are talking about a place that you obviously now very little about, yet you have an opinion already. Good for you!

Look GS12 Step 2 on the GS Schedule, if you earn more than I do, good for you! I'll make sure that when I go skiing this weekend (the mountains got almost a foot of powder the past few days) I'll be thinking how sad I am to have lost that bet!

In general, they will fuck you every chance they get. They hire people who's job it is to figure out how to fuck you over every chance they can. Thats reality

    Let's be civil boys.

This argument is not about who earns more as it is about what kind of work environment is better for you as an individual and the answer to that little question is that... no job out there is in your interests. I can GUARANTEE that there will be aspects about your job that make your job worse. For some its commute, for others its stress, for others it is work hazards, for others its low pay. There is always something to gripe about.

This one goes out to both of you. I do not care if you work for the union or non union employer... bottom line is that you are replaceable. Your job can be outsourced and or sourced to other places locally and long distance away.

When the time comes you will be SOL and JWF. Your so called union pension could be frauded off to some guy or gal stealing from the union. Your so called pension plan could be annulled when someone sues your company that may have been shut down 25 years ago... and there go all your hopes of a decent retirement. Your 401K fund can loose its value during economic ups and downs. Your factory or office can be shut down and no amount of union will save you.

Only thing that will make you competitive in job market is not who you have been but who you are and what set of diverse skills you can bring to your next employer.

Ohh... and seniority is pretty much lost when you stop being a member of one union and move to another union (unless they have direct ties which is rare).

Either way your job prospects are contingent on so many factors that its pretty much pointless pondering probabilities.

Thats cool, My dad lost his 401K almost entirely in the market crash. I know people that got canned when the company went chapter 11 and they lost their 401K completely. (Polaroid)

Pot, meet kettle. When was the last time you heard about some dude getting his face eaten off in Iowa? Dunno what a gs12 step 2 is, but I don't see any dollar figures in your post, so I assume you don't have the stones to back up your statement.

True...They own the company. They invested in the company to make money. In order to make money the company needs to make a profit and grow. If that does not happen, the stock loses value, sold and worthless. Then everybody is out of a job. So why would a company take a risk and pay a worker that does a menial task more than their worth, tons of benefits just to make them happy, but risk the company. That's bad management.
