A quick look at Salary.com's cost of living calculator indicates that the cost of living is 9.1% lower in Des Moines and that employers pay on average 3% more than Tampa for the same job.

So moving to Des Moines with your same pay would result in about $9000 in extra disposable income for you.

I will gladly acknowledge that I made an ass of myself in this thread. But guess what, 100% of my statements are fully verifiable. That speaks of my integrity and that is the stuff that this country needs more off.

And I'll gladly pay the higher cost of living to NOT live in Iowa.

 

Pretty close to the same in disposable income boost:
15% lower cost of living in Des Moines, but 4% lower income in Des Moines for the same job.

Still close to $9000 extra disposable income by moving to Des Moines.

My point is more related to your "I make more than you" statement. You'd have to earn $9000 extra to equal the same standard of living because it's more expensive to live where you do.

 

I was going to stay out of this too, but I felt a little offended by some of the generalizations that companies and their management are out to screw the employees, or that they hire people whose job is just that. I have been in management for a while, I have been laid off, and I have had to lay people off. None of it is fun, and it has nothing to do with screwing people over.

A big part of my job is to attract, retain, develop, and export talent (to other areas of the organization). This is good for the employee and good for the company as well. But sometimes we have to make tough business decisions based on what lies in front of us, and what lies in front of us is not always due to poor management. Those are not always happy decisions when it means cutting jobs, and I don't know anyone that does a happy dance when a layoff occurs, other than possibly the employee that was going to leave anyway and got a good severance package.

Funding large pension liabilities for retired union workers that are no longer with the company is a huge burden. With the low interest rates over the last several years, that means the pension funds have not grown as projected, and more company dollars have to be diverted to the funds. This means someone is either not going to get a job or someone is going to lose a job.

I've gone through many years with either no raise and even some years with a pay cut just so we could keep jobs or keep the company viable (meaning every job). MANY companies have done this with their management teams.

Would you take a cut in your pension check so someone could keep their job?

Yep, hit 6 figures the last 2 years, With a lower cost of living. Adjust that for Denver and I make almost double your salary. I didn't want this to be about me vs you but here you go.

Let's see, company has to pay retired people who aren't doing work. Hmm, where do you think that money comes from? If pensions didn't exist companies would have more money to pay current employees so they can manage it themselves and put it into their own retirements.

 

My retirement check comes from Hartford Inc. Co.
The company i drove for went out of business in 2002. The Teamsters union has nothing to do with the pension plan!

 

That is not how a pension gets funded and paid out... Which is why I ask, if that was a fact. There are MANY legal hoops to fund a pension, what you are talking is more of a "Ponzi Scheme".
