My bad, I had it wrong. The pension just put the company he used to work for out of business. VVV

I understand that the midwest may be experienceing issues. Lets be clear, We were talking about Iowa. These have nothing to do with my state. Lets look at a trend that is about Iowa.

    http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/19000.html

Our population didn't go down. I can find other sites as well if you want them that show our population growing fairly steadily since 1990. Lets argue with facts and not your Opinion about my state or surrounding states.

I think it speaks volumes that you had to leave your home town to find a job. Tells me Tampa isn't exactly a place I want to live, Ever. I got nothing against Denver. I love the area. I choose to live here in Iowa. I have job security and a hell of a place to raise a family.

Make sure you check for yourself how many members of congress the Midwest has LOST in the past 20-30 years. Maybe something like United States Census Bureau.

Oh and BTW, for the 2nd time; who talked smack about whose homestate again?

    Yeah, that's what I thought.

Your dad's 401k should be close to even now, unless he sold at the bottom. If he needed the money soon, it shouldnt have been in stocks.

They cant lose their 401k...They may have had a large portion invested in the company and it could have tanked if they went bankrupt, but a 401k just doesnt disappear.

How so? The Pension was a tax exemption on the company's balance sheet and tax return. It was no different than paying for the health insurance of the employees.

Please show where pension payments where a cost that drove them out of business?

Yes, like ALL the major companies that are still in business. Did you fund your 401K 100% by yourself? Nope, your employer matched your portion, that makes it a deduction in their corporate tax returns.

Make sure you tell your congressperson that you want all tax exemptions removed for all the companies. Let us know how that works!

Yes, there is a clause that allows federal employees to not be forced in regardless of the state they work in

Yes you can. When I worked for the IRS, there were a few peeps who were not union. They kept it to themselves...

Pensions can be picked up by the taxpayers if the pension fund and company go insolvent, it may not be what was promised but there is somewhat of a backstop supported by the feds.

    So facts bother you then?

Unless, they found a section of the Rockies or an Ocean in Des Moines, Iowa. Sorry, no need for me to see the video. I already saw both sides of I-80 for hours, and frankly that was enough!

No, but it's also not 100% funded by my company. It's 70% funded by me, that's a huge difference. And I get to choose how to invest it to best meet my needs.

The existence of corporate tax exemptions is a completely different and unrelated conversation. Bottom line is pensions are forced upon a company by unions and they are a drag on the economy.

True, that is a fact. But it is only a portion of it that is secured not 100%, just like bank/CU deposits up to $100K dollars. Would you like to get rid of that also?

BTW, the posters pension is being paid out by an insurance company, not by the GOVT.
