06 TRD sport with 46k. Yesterday I was going down a hill on the hwy at about 55 mph and it felt like I was braking, the rpms went and stayed high at about 2000 when I was off the gas and coasting. I tapped the gas and felt the trans shift with a thud.

According to the manual, my trans fluid shouldn't be due yet. I also get some wierd feelings from the truck lately. Sometimes seems like it takes too ,one to up shift or sometimes it jerks. Very intermittent. Anyone else have wierd trans issues???

Do you mean Tachometer. TPMS is Tire Pressure Monitoring System.

When you type "rpms" on the iPad it autocorrects to "tpms"... Thank you for pointing out that glaring typo in case other people in this forum were getting really confused about what I was asking. I'm sure it stymied so many people. I bet some even got little sleep because their brains were just spinning trying to figure out what I was talking about. Imagine, a TPMS sensor reading 2000 rpms? Ha! And then the priceless explanation of what TPMS is? That in and of itself has been the most valuable thing I've read on this forum. Thank you!

Now really, anyone have anything useful to reply with? I'd appreciate any suggestions or help from people that may have experienced similar issues. Thanks!

it seems to me sometimes that these trucks with auto trannys do downshift at odd times. such as when just taking foot of the gas pedal. downhill even more so.. even worse when youre braking going around a corner it feels like its throwing out an anchor when it downshifts. its probably normal though. it took me some time to get used the quirks my truck had with this kinda thing.

Was the engine still cold when it was doing this? It will hold a gear for longer if you jump in and go while the engine is not up to temp. Mine has always been kind of a rough shift from 1-2, but Toyota and Lexus models all seem to have had some electronic shift bugs from the 04-05 era when they were making the big shift to throttle by wire, so it doesn't worry me.

    2K RPM is high? lol.

Sounds like it was just engine braking. Must have been just at the right spot. Sounds perfectly normal.

    New to you truck?

I dont know if this is for your truck or not, but I have seen where some people have mentioned that thier auto's have an engine brake type function. I dont know if this accounts for your truck shifting hard, but they said when coasting down hill it would seem to gear down and slow down instead of coast. You might try searching for one of those threads and see if you can get any more info on you specific situation.

Was the tpms flashing when this happened? Seriously, the automatic trans on these trucks does the engine brake thing pretty pronounced at times. If i were you i'd get the fluid changed... even if you don't tow it's been in there for around 6 years. They'll more than likely do a drain and fill (my dealership doesn't do the full flush.) I had mine done at the 5 year mark even though it wasn't showing any problems and the truck only had 15,000 miles on it.

I've had this truck for 2.5 yrs and this is a new feeling in the transmission. I know 2000 rpms doesn't seem like much, but I was coasting down a hill with no gas pedal and this occurred on a portion of highway I have travelled hundreds of times. The rpms went UP and then stayed there as if it had shifted but I felt no shift until I tapped the gas and then it shifted into a gear pretty rough. I think I will try to get in for a transmission flush and have them check the fluid for issues as it comes out. I bought an extended warranty through my own dealership and know the guy who is our warranty liaison.

Check your fluid levels. If it is low it can start to act funny. You may have a small leak somewhere. It may have just gotten to a level where it is affecting things.

Some members here have posted that their fluid level was low straight out of the factory. Have them do the flush or drain/fill and you'll at least know it's up to the correct level... :)
