Im not familiar with the "state-run outlets" I dont watch US media. IMO, its full of fear mongering propaganda that hammers society with a false sense of security. And like Mr. Freeman said, "It's because of the way the media reports it". Its all about shock and awe to create that fear. But they do it for a reason. Would you watch cnn if they DIDNT report who the killer was, what he looks like, why he did it, ect?.. - No, you probly would switch over to fox and watch it there. If they show it, people become curious and will watch it.

Im not saying our media is any better, but there is quite a difference in how the media is produced in the US compared to other countries.

These people who are suffering and struggling through life look for acknowledgement from society, so they act out for everyone to see. I agree that if the media would cease to report these shocking events, there would be less of these events.

A good example is during the Vietnam war. IIRC, that was the last war that the media was allowed to broadcast the blood and gore from a war. Reporters were deep in the war and coming back with pictures and videos of innocent dead people and soldiers. The american public went crazy and thats when the large protesting riots started. Then, i think, the government passed some sort of legislature that banned reporters from reporting the gore from any war. I may not be %100 correct on these facts, but i believe that is the gist of it.

I give my respects to the children and families. I am also pulling out of this discussion.

First time I've ever heard this.....makes sense.

All the victims are in my thoughts and prayers. EVERY Teacher/Staff member in that building is a hero in my eyes. I'm proud and thankful of all Teachers in our country for the thankless work they do for our children daily.

no. I responded to your post #347. After reading it again, I believe I misunderstood your post.

I thought you were making the point that hijacking a plane was easier with a gun than with other weapons.

    my mistake.

If anyone else caught Gov. Huckabee and Geraldo just a little bit ago...I guess you'd agree, it was very very good.

If you missed it, you may want to watch or record the rebroadcast later tonight.

    Bravo Govenor. Bravo Mr. Rivera.

Bombings occur when a person wants to inflict mass damage on many people regardless of motive. No legal guns equals only criminals with guns and a shift by some to bombs or knives like in China. So no not rhetorical spin. I don't understand how some can see shootings or mass attacks of any type and want to give up the most effective way of stopping the threat. It takes WAY longer for police to show up than it does for a licensed CCW carrier to draw their weapon. Like happened in the Clackamas shooting...

Correct there are VERY few assault rifles owned in the US:

    assault rifle noun (Concise Encyclopedia)
Military firearm that is chambered for ammunition of reduced size or propellant charge and has the capacity to switch between semiautomatic and fully automatic fire. Light and portable, yet able to deliver a high volume of fire with reasonable accuracy at modern combat ranges of 1,000–1,600 ft (300–500 m), assault rifles have become the standard infantry weapon of modern armies. Their ease of handling makes them ideal for mobile assault troops crowded into personnel carriers or helicopters, as well as for guerrilla fighters engaged in jungle or urban warfare. Widely used assault rifles are the U.S. M16, the Soviet Kalashnikov (the AK-47 and modernized versions), the Belgian FAL and FNC, and the German G3.

    And what Haslefre said...

    Just horrible.
    I just don't know...
I used to shoot competitivly for years, and I just do not understand the gun addiction going on in the world today
I just don't get it, I really do not see the need for everyone to have guns. My heart goes out to these families

Not sure if it was previously mentioned, but as if this couldn't be any worse, I heard the Westboro Baptist Church will be at it again and present to picket at the childrens funerals and praise God for his work at judgement.

They blame Connecticut for me one of the first to, and I'm quoting them, "legalizing *** marriage" and that is why this happened.

Friday started with great weather. Sunny, clear sky's. Itook end of the year off. So on Friday I was home. Around 10:00 am. I took the dog out. As I am standing looking at I - 84. I see crown Vic roaring down the hill, with all lights flashing going westbound. I am thinking probably accident, here in Southbury we seem to be getting them often especially right before the bridge with Newtown. Seconds later another crown Vic. Full throttle flashing lights. Now I see ambulance, and another then 6 ambulances in a row from St Marry in Waterbury. So as I am standing there watching armored car roarin down the hill. I hear sirens in distance. Those are Oxford finest roaring towards I-84. Joining them Middlebury. So I am thinking "WThh" run into the house open news find nothing. Turn on the police scanner on internet and that's where we hear about shooting in Newtown school.

On Friday we went to Newtown for vigil in St Rose church but had to leave 15 minutes later because all the TV crews jumping in to faces.

I think you're absolutely right, Rardigo. I may be a part of this new generation, but I was raised 'old school,' with God and family first. My parents raised us right, with a fair mixture of discipline and love. I think we all came out okay- people always used to comment "Your kids are so well-behaved- they're angels!" and things like that. We had no video games, no violent TV, and we learned to work to get what we wanted and needed instead of having it handed to us like so many these days. I would say it makes my lot different than most, so I can see what you're talking about. The way our society is as a whole is absolutely appalling, and is far more of a valid reason for this terrible tragedy than guns. Stricter gun control will do nothing but make things worse- take the guns away from law-abiding citizens, and only criminals will have them. This will make it even easier for them to get away with terrible things such as the event spurring this thread. Guns, believe it or not, can keep things from getting worse.
Take a look at Switzerland, for instance. The country has a population of roughly six million, along with at least two million publicly-owned firearms. Pretty high ratio of people owning a firearm. Guns are deeply rooted within Swiss culture, yet the rate of crime involving guns is so low that they do not even keep statistics.

this guy had these weapons for one reason. To feel powerful. Owning weapons to compensate for some deficiency. Hunters and target enthusiasts have a legitimate reason to own. This guy had them to feel powerful, or to take lives with. (I know I'm generalizing)

Unless they have since backed off those reports they said the mother was a gun enthusiast herself and used to take her kids target shooting with her guns. So for all we know they were in the household for valid reasons of sporting and protection.

I think the real question is whether or not she really should have owned them if we find out that indeed the gunman had a long documented history of mental illness. I think it's a foregone conclusion he obviously did have mental issues but I haven't heard anything yet about specifics or whether he had been treated in the past for anything.

The fact is, is the gun is a tool and the person is the weapon. The mother may not have had the guns locked up, but at the same time, her kid was 20 and she may have felt he was safe around them.

This incedent will be the end to gun rights atleast in my state. It's a tragedy, and I'm connected to this, as my friend lost her son in this shooting. But I still don't think a ban of legal weapons is the anwser. He could have done the same thing with pistols.

Two peices of info cam out in the news. The washington mall shooter was met by a 22 Y\O CCW carrier. The CCW had a bead on the shooter, noticed a woman pass behind him and did not shoot. ( An EXCEPTIONAL show of restraint for an untrained person of his age) At the same time, the shooter noticed the CCW, backed up, and the next shot he put in his own head.

The Newtown shooter did the same thing the minute he noticed cops closing in.

These people are looking for power and easy targets. Put a cop at each school, and this shit drops to almost zero.
