Don't forget, gas has weight.. and when you increase the amount of fuel you carry, you decrease you decrease the load ability of the truck and reduce gas mileage... Suspension mods will be needed if you want more gas and the same cargo ability.

True true.... 7 pounds per gallon doesn't sound like much, but it adds up.
20 gallons is a small passenger.
    50 gallons is a wife.

I have modded my truck to carry an extra 5-10 gallons of fuel and it only cost me about 60 bucks. Below are instructions for the Mod

    1. Buy 1 or more 5 gallon gas cans.
    2. Fill them up.
    3. place in bed of truck.

    It requires no fabrication
Will not inter-fear with on board electronics
    Is Legal
Easily removable when not in use
Can also be used to fill up other tanks
Provides 60-120+ miles of "emergency fuel"

If you want to get fancy there are multiple carriers including bumper mounts which can be used as well.

Since everyone likes pictures here is a link for your reference to display some of the possibilities, enjoy.

I do 2 week off road trips at least twice a year with a group of friends.
Two have extend range fuel tanks, one in a FJ60 (40gal) the other in a Non_USA 70 series, diesel. (30 gal)
I carry an extra 10-20 gals in Scepter Fuel cans depending on the trip.
I think for the extra weight when full & extra expense of the tank I can buy a lot of fuel, they have to stop to piss or get a soda as much as I need to top of the tank. We restock grociers & beer so the chance to refuel isnt far away. Only once have I been sucking fumes pulling into a gas station after dumping my spare fuel and the fuel tank. There are other gadgets I would rather spend my money towards.

    True true.
With a 400+ mile highway range on my 5-lug, road trips still need a stop every couple of hours for the restroom, coffee, and to stretch. I'm a freaking robot with a 5-gallon bladder on a road trip if I'm alone, but even then, 6 hours is a little much without stopping to stretch.

I have often thought about getting a second stock tank from a junkyard and putting it on the passenger side. Exhaust would have to move, but I think it could be done. Connect it to the original to only have one fill nozzle.

You would have to run a transfer pump.

The only way to have the two tied together would be to connect them together with a 1" hose at both the bottom and the top, and the bottom hose can not be routed higher in the middle than it is at the ends... it would have to pass under the driveshaft, and would be quite vulnerable.

You'd also potentially have issues with the EVAP system.

Not sure on Scepter marine. But it says duramax on it. Changed the pump handle to a metal unleaded gas handle, place up on shelf about 3.5 to 4 ft. off floor and use only as a gravity flow. Works great for the wife when she needs to fill lawn mowers.

You and I think differently on this and I think it's largely due to the scope of where we live. Living in AK the benefit of an overland vehicle with a larger radius is huge! That opens up a whole new environment to explore.

I'm not in AK. Ben but, I'm with you. I have a long drive to work (95% easy interstate) and when the Tacoma is used it can do only 2.5 round trips. Plus, once a month or so the Tacoma does a 1,200 mile round trip. My bladder outlast the tank even when lightly loaded & driving at reasonable speeds.
