To those of you talking about further arming yourselves and this discussion of arming teachers, wives, mothers, grandmothers, etc. etc.....IMHO I don't understand that logic at all. If you would look outside our own country, to places like the UK and Australia, where gun control is extremely strict, mass shootings, and gun violence in general, is EXTREMELY low. I just don't understand how MORE guns is the solution to this problem.

From 2009, but still holds true to today. UK has more violent crimes than the US by population...

When you can't go to the mall, movie, elem school, restraunt ect....I'd rather be armed. Our country is beyong the point of disarming and becoming civil. Also don't forget that there are about 330mil ppl in the US. Australia has about 25 mil, Canada just over 30. That's about the population of Texas. So if you're looking at violent crime and murder rates, you need to adjust it per capita. The US is still much higher, but its a better comparison.

One beneficial change would be accessible mental healthcare

Agreed. But that would be the only beneficial change. Not getting into healthcare stuff here, but he could take the stupid one about contraceptives and add that money into mental health care. Mental health care should be the #1 change to any countries health care plans...

Again, not getting deep into that part of the health care in this thread. I don't need a banning or this to get locked.

Guns should be for hunting or recreational use. America can't/ won't be giving up guns anytime soon, but the reason most people carry is because some other potential idiot is allowed to too. If I was in the states I would probably carry too just to protect myself from someone else that's allowed.

My opinion on this case is that it was a gun responsibility issue. All 3 or 4 of those guns she owned should have been locked up in a safe with trigger locks on each one. If she had of done that it would of been a lot harder for him to do what he did. Some will say that he could of got them illegally and such but the unavailability of the guns could of stopped the attack before it began.

    Gun-related deaths per 100,000 people
    UK .25
    AUS 1
    Canada 4.7
    US 10

I'm not saying disarm the country. That's ridiculous. I'm saying maybe some tighter restrictions on weapons should be looked into.

mental health care is surely to be part of the debate.

what do we do as a free society with those who have mental health "troubles". medicate them? what if that only works some time? or they fall off the meds?

how about institutionalizing the mentaly ill? then you are into civil liberities?

no doubt...along with the issue of deadly weapons and what young impressionalble minds are subject to in our modern 21st century
world...add mental heath...single parent homes...and the issues of faith....and it is not an easy row to hoe.

and, as I posted earlier...it all involves the bill of rights and constitutional amendments.

Then they will just use something else like they do in other countries. Please go look at the knife attacks/deaths in the UK. Or the massive use of baseball bats they use. If we didn't have the ability to purchase guns in the US, we would have a lot of the same attacks. But I believe someone in this state of mental instability would find a way to pull a Ted Kaczynski and use fertilizer and blow something up. Where there is a will, there is a way.

These mass killings wouldn't happen by knife or baseball bats it would be a lot easier to disarm a man when he can't drop you before you take 2 steps towards him. The incident in china doesn't count they were just children unable to fend him off.

Seems hypocritical to suggest otherwise if you ask me

Faith is not a pre-requisite to sane behaviour

If you will then look at the frequency of BOMBINGS compared to the pretty much daily shootings we have here in the US, I'm gonna stand by my opinion. As far as knives and baseball bats go, I feel a LOT more comfortable defending myself against a kid with a baseball bat when compared to a kid with a gun.
