Yes i definitely will go with air bags for sure my taco is the prerunner trd model with bilstein shocks but then again I have 107,000 miles on it so I will do some modifications that will be needed.

After having tents and popups a hard side camper is so much quieter and far more comfortable.

Workman has been thinking of purchasing a Fourwheelcamper Eagle model for a few years now. They a very well built camper made for offroading. Weight has been the concern though for Workman, they weigh a little under 700#. This is due to its offroad friendly flexible aluminum frame. But add all your gear, food, water, ect, your truck would have over 1000lbs in the bed. The Tacoma would eat gas and the weight would put too much strain on your drivetrain, that's how Workman feels anyway.

Workman has seen a few Tacoma's with this exact setup, V6 AC Tacoma 4x4+Eagle Fourwheelcamper, and he got the chance to talk with 2 of the owners and ask them some questions. Both owners thought that the Tacoma handled pretty good with the camper(with air bags), and enjoyed the hell out of them. Both claimed 12-18mpg, and were using the camper with another person. One of the Eagles was all decked out, must have cost 20+thousand, and was very nice inside....for being in the bed of a Tacoma with a 6 ft bed:cool:

For the price tag of even the basic Eagle shell model though, Workman feels he would be a lot better off going full size pickup with bigger camper.

    This.

Other than short weekend outings for one or two nights, I haven't actually camped in 30 years.
I miss it, somewhat... from sleeping on my buddy's boat, I know my back and hips can't handle sleeping on surfaces that didn't used to bother me.

I bought this for $1500 and sold it 5 years later for the same price.
My old Tacoma was the 2.7l, could have had a bit more power but was ok. I had we'll over 450,000km's on it when I made my longest trip, the truck ran great.
I installed air bags and the truck handled actually really well.
I wouldn't say I off roaded with it, but went down several 2 track trails where I needed 4wd without issue.
The only thing I didn't like was the lack of storage for BBQ's, wood etc. since I no longer had a bed.

Is there a short list of slide in pop up campers that fit the Tacoma? I'm looking for a used camper - but generic searches lead to may ads that say "should" fit all trucks with 6' + beds. I believe the width between the rear wheels in the bed is the key?? I believe mine is about 41" (2012 Tacoma base 4x4). Are these as hard to find as I'm finding??? Any hints will be appreciated !!

Just looking for a decent shape decent looking camper for occasional weekend trips and possibly a few week long + trips. A list of what fits would help with searching ..... Thanks All

I don't have a list but mine is a Scamper S606 circa 1990. I turned up on Craigslist a few years ago for something like $1200 a couple hours from me and in great condition, I jumped on it. It fits almost perfectly. I say almost because the Tacoma box is about 1.5 inches too deep for it. In the photo below you can see a bit of the sub-frame I built for it. This frame mounts via my bed frame bolts and allows me to run without hold downs outside the box, the camper clamps to the sub-frame. I have a write-up I've been meaning to do about the latest sub-frame but haven't gotten to that yet. The camper was first used in my 2009 DCLB Sport and now in my 2013 DCLB SR5. When I redid the frame for the 2013 I made numerous improvements to the design including an easy way to remove the frame when not in use. I am very happy with the fit of the camper on the truck, narrow enough that I can drive without mirror extensions and just short enough that I can still close my tailgate with the camper in (the backup camera is very handy when parking with the camper. Weight is a concern but with air bags the truck handles the camper fine. I did one trip of 5000 miles over 9 days with the 2009 and camper. There was slightly more rear tire wear after the trip.
