BALL PYTHON: SNAKE EXPERT, HELP?

i have a couple questions pertaining to my Ball python, if you know alot about snakes, please send me a PM!
i would post my questions, but i dont want to have my thread locked. thank you!

 

Don't use a heat rock. Use a heat lamp on one side of the tank only because some snakes will sit on the heat rock and burn their underside. The snake will be able to get away from the lamp if it is on one side of the tank. Get one of the red bulb heat lamps at Petco or Petsmart. It doesn't have to be very powerful.

DO NOT feed the snake inside the tank. Get another container like a large cardboard box to drop food in for him to eat. Don't handle the food and then touch him because your hand will smell like food. Just drop the food in and wash your hands before getting him out. That way, your snake won't want to bite you unless you hurt it. If you feed him in the tank, he may think anything coming into the tank is food.

I worked at Petco about a decade ago. I liked walking around with a scorpion or bearded dragon on my shoulder while I talked to customers.

 

Your other thread got locked because of what you said you were going to do.. had nothing to do with the snake.

I don't like heat pads for the same reason as a heat rock. They can get burned. As for a lamp, don't just go for the heat lamp, use the UV bulb. They need the vitamins from it as if they are in the sun.

I used to take my snakes to places with me all of the time. I would put my hair in a ponytail and they would wrap around it and tuck their head inside. You would not believe how many compliments I got on my "hair wrap". Until she moves....

 

Do the snake a favor and go to Petco or Petsmart and talk to a reptile person, or do some research online. TacomaWorld isn't the best place for snake advice.

 

the lamp petsmart recommended me has like a black light bulb, ill look at the box when i get home and see exactly what it is. it doesnt feel like it puts off too much heat.

i have been taking him everywhere! shopping, get gas, etc! its so awesome haha.

i already went in and talked to the reptile person, he helped me quite a bit but i think he also mislead me a little bit.

 

I've never heard of black bulbs, but they seem to be the same as the red bulbs after looking at them on Petco.com. As long as it puts out a little heat and the snake can escape the heat by going on the other end of the aquarium, you should be good to go. Get a half log or something the snake can hide in.


Also, don't put the water bowl anywhere near the lamp light. It will grow mold and other crap in the water bowl, and you'll have to scrub it every once in a while.

 

I guess I'll ask the obvious question here, why would you get a pet you know nothing about? Shouldn't you have asked all this before actually getting it?

ball pythons are easy. no heat rocks. they cant really regulate how hot they are getting and can get burned. i used a heat pad with a thermostat. measure temps. i felt safe with a heat pad. i used a heat lamp with a standard bulb. i just warmed a branch section that the snake would curl up in.

UV is more important to lizards than primative snakes. it is a calcium thing if i remember correctly. snakes gets alot of calcium from bones, skin..that type of thing.

i never gave my snakes a water bowl. i did however give them daily soaks in a lukewarm water tub. they loved it.

is this ball python captive raised? is it a baby?

thanks! as of right now i have a box that he sleeps in, i will go get something cool for him to sleep in!

i asked tons of questions, but i was not confident i was getting the right answers.

i will get a heat pad with a thermostat! im going to get a tree branch today and put it in the corner, i will put the lamp on the branch like you did, sounds like a good idea.

i have a water bowl in mine, i thought about letting him swim around in the bath for a little bit, i read they love water. so ill probably do that!

it is captive raised. he is very very tame, hes used to being around a neck for 4 hours a day from his previous owner.

i have no idea how old he is, and neither does his previous owner. i havent measured yet but he is about 3 feet long (guessing)
