I don't know where they got that from, but at least down here that is false. I know they can't use road salts because they do not want then to drain into all of the hundreds of creeks and streams that lead into the rivers and lakes. The water Eco system is big here and they protect it, not sure if it changes up north but I know it is not salt down here.
Well, that sums it up well. Pretty accurate actually on many respects.
Now totally curious, aside from the salt that doesent exist, why not? Legit wondering what negatives you have come across.
Fuck ya it will, Id and wyo will be the last stand for just about everything, absolutely nothing out here anyone wants, and a shit ton of guns and people who cherish them
Idaho is almost just as desolate and spread out and has some gnarly wilderness as well. If you want to disappear and build a Compound in a zombie apocalypse idaho isn't a bad choice either.
Fuck ya! We love out guns! 'Erdahhurh!
    Same, I know a few people where 30 to 40 isn't unreasonable.

I think they dump a magnesium mix on all the interstates around here (only place I see it used, sand on all the hwy's, county and city roads) and magnesium is a type of salt isn't it?

Nice! My mother in law has a shotgun that belonged to her great grandpa or something. It was made back in the 1880's or 1890's. We're not allowed to shoot it though:spy: haha

This is a kind of a carry on of the wide vs skinny from the Overland Expo thread, so we don't trash that thread too bad. haha

So I learned something interesting in physics a couple weeks ago that is really simple and kind of surprised me that I hadn't ever really thought of it like this before. haha

So if you know how much your rig weighs, you can figure out how much tire tread you have on the ground based on the psi you have tires inflated to. This really probably only applies to flat ground and will also vary due to grooves in tire tread, but basically you just take your total rig weight and divide it by the psi your tires are at.

    Pounds...................square inches
    -------- = pounds* -------------- = square inches
    psi............................pounds

Then you just divide that by 4 and you can figure out how much surface area each tire has down. So really like in my case for example: My rig weighs about 5500lbs with me in it. With my 10" wide tires at 15 psi, I have about 91.7 square inches of tread on the ground per tire. With Monte's 12.5" wide tires at 15 psi, I would have the same 91.7 square inches of tread down. So are far as grip on a flat, grippy surface wide tires and skinny tires actually would grab pretty similarly to some degree. (Obviously there must be more to this or else drag cars wouldn't run super wide tires.)

The main difference between the two tires (assuming they stay the rated width at all psi) Would be that the surface area of my tire would be 10"x9.17" and Monte's would be 12.5"x7.33". I wonder how that plays in to the whole wide vs skinny debate, because there are different lengths as well (again as long as weight and psi are the same between the two).

So there really isn't that much difference when it really boils down to it. Interesting....perception is really all that matters then...I would think...no?

Honestly I just got fatties cause I think they look bad ass :p now tho I'm glad I did. I like the wider grip pattern out here anyways.

    Yes....and no..

The different patterns do make a big difference in how the truck drives and feels and acts on terrain.

Well that's what the whole skinny vs wide debate is at.

I see uses for both. But I think that out here on my trails with all the granite small boulders its better to have the wider floaty stance.

But maybe we can do a truck swap in lander to see.

I was tthinking In terms that both tires would be exactly the same tread pattern. Or completely bald like drag slicks.

Yeah that is why I said it isn't exact. Tread pattern definitely has a big impact because for the most part the gaps in tread could just be subtracted from your total surface area (not that it would be easy to figure out the surface area of those gaps vs knobs haha)

Another thing is I was wondering just how much wider some tires actually get when deflated. Sure my sidewalls bulge and get wider but I don't think my contact patch actually actually gets much wider between 10 and 32 psi.

I was looking at them when I had them at 11 psi and the knobs are so thick that they actually kept the side walls from contacting the ground (flat ground anyway) even at 11 psi. And even at 32 psi I think I have all 7" of tread width down already so until sidewall starts to touch the ground I don't think my tread width actually gets any wider.

The biggest reason why the skinny vs wide will likely never be solved is just because ever rig/tire/gear packed for trip/trail/etc combo (too many variables) will perform best with a specific width and even then that best performance may not be noticeably better over a wide range of widths. haha (is what I mean by that is, say a 12.5" tire is the perfect width for an obstacle, but you can still get up the obstacle just fine with anything between 6" wide to 16" wide. Basically the gains at 12.5" are so small you can't even notice them)
